On another board, we've been talking about the possibility of CWD in the state of Michigan.  My question is, how bad is it out West?  Are you noticing large losses of Elk and Deer?  Has your hunting changed due to CWD?  There are many in my state in a panic after CWD has been found next door in Wisconsin.

I'll be hunting right in the middle of a CWD unit in Colorado this fall.  It's my childhood hunting area.  About 5% of the tested heads come back positive.  I ate some nice doe burger from this unit last year that was tested and came back negative.  I'm excited about my hunt more than concerned about CWD.  I'll probably not feed the meat to my children though, unfortunately.

Yes, it is a serious situation, but even in the biggest problem areas most deer are not affected.  The biggest issue is containment and people's livelihoods.  I think they will develop a live animal test soon and this will calm things down tremendously.  There is much unknown about this problem which makes people nervous.  But it was recognized way back in the 60's.  Mad Cow disease in Britain has helped increase the panic in a big way.  So the problem is real, some solutions are available- they will involve time, technology and politics.
