SOCAL WATERFOWL ROUNDUP -- ONS Jim Matthews -- 10dec03

Greenwing teal continue to dominate bag

By JIM MATTHEWS, Outdoor News Service

Greenwing and cinnamon teal continued to make up the bulk of the bag at public duck hunting locations throughout Southern California -- from the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area on the Salton Sea to the Kern National Wildlife Refuge in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

The first wave of new migrant greenwings arrived in this region two weeks ago and more and more birds have flooded into the region since then. At the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, greenwings accounted for 132 of the 211 birds taken over the two shoot days last week. At Wister, greenwings and cinnamon teal accounted for 146 of the 298 ducks taken, and even Kern -- which generally has a wide variety of ducks -- there were 110 greenwings and 104 cinnamons in the 546 ducks taken this past week.

Overall, averages at public hunting areas have been from one to two birds per hunter. When windy or rainy weather has coincided with new flights of birds, the averages have jumped to three or 3 1/2 birds per hunter. Kern had a 3 1/2 bird average last Wednesday and the two hunters at Lake Perris last Wednesday had a great shoot day, bagging three mallards, three greenwings, and a pintail.
Raahauge's Duck Club in Prado Basin saw averages above two birds per hunter each of its three shoot days this past week, and greenwing teal made up the bulk of the bag there, too, at 40 of the 148 ducks taken.

Barrett Lake, one of the San Diego City Lakes, has moved into its late-season form with good numbers of diving ducks -- ringnecks and ruddies -- providing good shooting. Hunters averaged 3.2 birds per hunter over the two shoot days this past week and six limits were logged in. Eugene Hanson, Bonito, and George Hanson, San Diego, hunted the No. 8 blind in the Hauser Arm and shot eight ringnecks, two canvasback, two gadwall and a wigeon last Wednesday. On Saturday, Rick Bongiovanne, Lemon Grove, and Steve Claunch, San Diego, hunted the No. 7 blind in Hauser and bagged five ringnecks, four wigeon, two shovelers, two canvasbacks, and one greenwing.

Henshaw also opened up to hunting this past week with fair to good shooting, most hunters getting one or two birds.

The goose hunting has remained pretty consistent at Wister this past week with 113 snows and Ross' geese taken. Wednesday was the best shoot day with 60 light geese in the bag, better than a half-bird per hunter.
