I have always relied on the moon phase for deer hunting
My Dad always talked about that as being the best time to hunt.
that and the wind and rain said that during a new moon the game wold be out
more during the day. Rain mist and sleet would keep the game under cover.
and the wind from the north would keep them moving on a cold dry day.
what are your feelings about this.

I too, tend to rely on Moon Phase and weather, However; a full moon or a little rain, isn't going to keep me out of the woods. I've also learned, that during the rut, that all goes out the window. Good luck this year.

I think hunting during a new moon has its advantages, and it usually gives me a warm fuzzy if its not a full moon. But that said, it's usually not a show stopper for me if I hunt a full moon (I only get a couple opportunites a year). Last year, I hunted with a full moon the night before, but it was extremely overcast, so the moon light was diffused pretty good. I ended up taking a small public land buck the next morning, and I saw several other deer also.

I've always looked forward to extreme weather. Extreme cold, rain, or both has usually yielded more activity for me. I figured that they are hungry and cold and need to get out and feed when its cold to stay warm. If its raining I think they will feed with a more urgent objective after the rain stops. Couple this with a dark/no moon, and I suspect that you would see increased activity in the low light hours of the day.

I agree about the rut.. sometimes that is the only thing that will bring a nocturnal buck out of the woods during daylight. One thing I have noticed about hunting the rut, and that is deer activity is pretty much driven by hot does in the area. If I'm hunting during the rut, and not seeing any deer, then Im in the wrong place. Usually if there is a hot doe in the area, I see all kinds of action. So hunting the rut can be a BIG advantage, and a big disadvantage.. just depends where the action is in relation to where Im hunting.

I Remember that happened to me last year on the new moon phase it was over cast and did not work at all. Every year I usually score good
on thanksgiving day when no one is around and all is quite. We have Thanksgiving the evening of wednesday and head out to the ranch early after midnight. Friday morning after Thanksgiving day is also fairly good.I walk to the blind with a six foot string tied to my belt loop and drag a wet cloth with Tinks 69 and make a few circles 100yds around the deer blind the I take the string off and hang it on a tree where it barely touches the ground a good 100 yds away, then I walk to the blind and wait just before daylight. I also do it in the evening around three pm. I add scent to the cloth every 100 yds or so then I empty the bottle under the cloth when I hang it, it usaully is only very little thats left.

works great! I bet you guys have tried this .
