He's pretty gentle, about 4.5 ft long, likes to climb the tree outside my office window and watch me from about 3 ft away. Fast as lighting too.

It looks like you got a few answers over at POTN, I'm not much of a help on snake ID.

Good exposure and nice framing on the pic though. 100mm that close to any snake takes...... Well, you know.

very good photo, It may be a western patch nose snake, it is very similar to the one I photographed a while back here in Arizona, need to see more of his back pattern, and yes they are extremely fast.

That top snake looks like a black water snake. Very good at eating fish and small rodents

Thanks Zach, they dont really give me the willies like some people. Now a bug - that's a different story. I hate bugs- especially spiders. I need a 400 macro for bugs.

Qualsroost - it seems a little light in color. This guy is almost solid black with a very white underbelly. The patches are very random and very dark.

Lurediver, thanks mate!

Jesse, that makes the most sense to me, although I thought they had a yellow belly?

That looks like a black rat snake to me.

Here is one I took with a reversed lens.
