I hope the links below work for the pics...

My family decided to give our son a hog hunt for his 8th grade graduation present. This would be his 3rd hog hunt and his second successful hunt. It has become custom to have my 10 year old daughter join us... she's been on hunts with me since she was 4. Anyways, my friend at work guides on some ranches in the Hollister area and he offered to take us on a hunt. We went out Wednesday night to try our luck for the second time. We met my buddy at 5:30 and we were hunting by 6:00. we drove around a little to take a look around and spotted a hog feeding in the next draw. Instead of banging away at 200 yards we decided to put on a stalk. We closed to about 75 yards and got my son on the shooting sticks. The hog had no idea we were around. My friend said it sounded like my son was hyper ventilating trying to get his breathing under control. Well, when my son was ready he squeezed the trigger and shot right over the hogs back.Needless to say he wasn't happy with himself for missing the shot. I tried to tell him to lift his head up... everyone misses.

As we were getting up to walk back to the truck, my buddys brother who was with us came flying back down the hill telling us more hogs were coming. 3 big sows and a ton of little ones came trotting through the brush and my buddy told my son to shoot the last one coming through the brush. My son did just that and nailed a big dry sow bringing up the back of the line. Needless to say we were all thrilled and my son went from being really mad a minute earlier to being completely thrilled. We had a blast and it doesn't get any better sharing these memories with your children. I will remember this hunt forever and so will my son and daughter.

For those who are curious, my son shoots a Remington 700 in 7-08 with 140 grain Winchester power points.
He shot his sow a liilte too far back, thru the hams and broke her pelvis bone. Fortunately not too much of the hams were damaged.

Sorry for rambling on but I'm real proud of him and I wanted to share the story. Thanks a lot.

Great story, and kudos to all involved!

Great job getting closer instead of taking the long shot, too!

Thanks everybody. It is a memory we will have forever.

Something my boy told me reminded me that he is learning well. The first shot he took but missed turned out to be a sow with about 8-10 little ones. No one saw the little ones in the tall grass even at 50 yards. After he missed the shot and finally saw the little ones scatter, he told me he was glad he missed the shot because without the mom the little ones would die and then that could hurt the population. There wouldn't be enough pigs for other people if the sows with little ones were all shot. I told him I was proud to hear a 14 year old understand this, there's 44 year olds that haven't figured this out.I'm glad he knows already what is right.

Thanks again.

Wow that is a great hog. Congrats to your son for a job well done. Everyone misses and is just part of hunting. Tell him to keep his head high because that was one hell of a hog he shot! Sows are better eating anyways. What did she weigh in at?

We guess she weighed about 225 or so on the hoof. After we gutted her she was 185 hanging on the scale. You're right too... she tastes great. Thanks for the kudos. My son enjoys reading them.
