Seeing all those monster elk heads at the ISE show got me going.  The only problem is comming up with $3500 to $16000 for a guided hunt.

I've heard that there is decent elk hunting in southern Oregon.  I'm looking for all the info I can get on hunting there on public land.

Anything you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Oregon does have some very good Elk hunting. I would look at  the areas around either John Day (central Oregon) or the Blue Mts in NE Oregon. I have never hunted there but I know people that have most have had pretty good luck.

I've never hunted Oregon myself, but all my research shows smaller heads coming from up there. The best heads are coming from NM, AZ, and NV, in order of difficulty to draw. All have plenty of public land for a do it yourself hunt. You can get by for $2,000-$2,500 including tags and license if you camp out. Good luck!

fishhead   I have seen Elk while turkey hunting. The first thing I would do is call the Game and Fish and see if they have any stats books telling how many Elk are in an area. I am not sure if OR has this but I know AZ does. You can also talk to the biologists in the area you want to hunt.                Fubar

I have hunted elk in northeast orgeon many times and there are a lot of them. Never hunted in southern part of the state but the last regulation I have (1995) lists seasons and tags for every management unit.

Play fair.

If you have ever tried to hunt elk in southern Oregon, its just kind of scarry. There are way to many people, and the elk never sit still. Some one always thinks there right behind the heard, but they have no idea that the heard went flying by 2 days ago. It would be much better if Oregon was twice the size or had half the people.

My buddies tried to sucker me into a trip to southern Oregon last year. They went with Roe Outfitters. They have access to several ranch properties and the guides all work for the forest service when it is not hunting season. The cost was 3600 dollars a person. Apparently the accomodations were nice and so were the guides. The weather this year was dry and hot. They only saw one elk the whole time. It was a shooter bull and the guy shooting missed. So much for that......This particular outfitter was at the ISE and they are on the web but, I don't know their address. I would do all the checking I could before spending a lot of money. I am looking for a guide in Wyoming with the same group of friends. This time I am going, and I don't want to waste a bunch of money for nothing.....
