I'm looking into hunting southern Or for deer next year. My son is turning 12 and I'm looking for someplace a little closer to home. I'm from way northern Ca, the Red Bluff area. We have horses and pack but I'll be looking at places where we can hunt out of the truck too. I'd like to find something north of Keno but I'm not really sure where I want to go. I'll be able to go up and do some scouting this summer and plan on spending 10 days hunting deer up that way next fall.
Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Most of the deer in The keno and the Southern Cascades start migrating down during the bow season. At least that's what the biologists say. There are hundreds of miles of trails with assorted wilderness areas north of the Keno Unit. Deer numbers increase as you move east off the mountains.

Any area specifically your looking for?? Bow or rifle??

For elk the area around Miller Lake west of Chiloquin has quite a few in the wildnerness areas. You can access the Pacifc Crest Trail about 2 miles from the trailhead at the lake. I've been up there during late summer and have seen lots of sign. It's just bloddy thick and visiblity is poor. Maybe from a horse you'd have a better vantage point.
