WE were headed up to our place and had to stop by my friends on the way up. As we were pulling up to the gat I was looking at a group of cows out around some hay rings. It was about then time we puilled up to the gate I noticed this boar hog coming out across the wide open pasture. It was headed straight towards us. Well we sat there wishing I had a rifle and watched. It comes under the cross fence and starts to root in an area I had posted pic's of a short time ago. Well I decided we neded to go on and get things done so the wife gets out of the truck opens the gate and gets back in. The hog pays us no mind. We drive along the road slowly watching and waiting for it to run across in front and hopefully by the folks hunting on the other place next to here. No dice. It just looks up and watches us drive by. Bear in mind that the grass is only about 6" or so tall so it isn't in any sort of cover.

WEll we get to the barn and I get my rifle out from under everything in the back seat, and head back. At this point I am thinking, this hog just can't be this stupid and still be standing there. Well, yep he was. Still there rooting away. I pull up and watch him for a few minutes waiting for a shot then bust him a good one.

I have the pictures posted up on my site here, My Webpage - New Pic's

Hopefully after this evening and tomorrow, I will have more new additios to the pic's as well as the freezer.

Way to go 41! Looks like some fine eatin' there. Have you ever cured the bacon or hams on these feral pigs? Love my home cured bacon from domestics. What rifle/ammo did you bust this one with? Looks like a mid-shoulder shot from the pic.

Still below zero here today. Bright sun, but brutally cold and snow covered.

Hey inchr48,

this hog didn't quite make it to our freezer. It was a pretty potent smellin bugger. Generally when they smell like this one did they taste about the same way.

I did however get a nice sow this afternoon. It is out there in the cooler chillin. I weighed it when I got it in and it went 183# before dressing it out. I added the picture of it to the same albumn. We are supposed to head back in the morning sometime and do a couple of drives between myself and my daughter. Hopefully she wil get in a shot or two herself.

As for the bacon and hams, they are generally to small and lean for the bacon and the hams I tried once and it just shriveled up to about half of what it originally was. Same thing just to lean. They are however great slow cooked on the pit for several hours. For the most part though, I like to steak them out and whatever is left over have a place close by the house make pan sausage out of it.

The rifle used was a 25/06 loaded with factory Hornady 117gr SST's. The hog ran about 20 or so yards then summersaulted to a stop.

I cure the hams from my hogs and they turn out great. You can look up some great brine recipes through google.
