I posted this in the bowhunting section but I'll post it here too for you hog hunting finatics!! I just got back from my annual hog/turkey hunt in central Ca with my bro Al and my bro in law Dave. We hunt this small piece of property (180 acres) just outside San Jose. It's Dave's buddy's land. Kinda pretty aint it!

On Friday afternoon we set up our modest camp.

We left camp and immediately spot three hogs. Al and Dave are hunting with guns. I wanna see Al draw first blood so I grab his rifle and hand it to him. I got to see him miss a dandy at about 80 yards.
We split up and I end up at one of my favorite spots. There was hardly any sign in the area but I was optomistic, because I have my new Bow Tech Guardian with me. Anyways, I am creeping down this hill and spot three hogs, right in front of me. They all look like sows so I decide to shoot the biggest one. I nailed her. Hit her so hard it flipped her over like I've never seen before (Muzzy shattered the opposite leg bone). Hogs run in three different directions. I move down the hill about 10 yards and spot her bed down at about 60 yards. I just watched her for about 15 minutes and then hear crunching off to the side. At about 25 yards a huge pregnant sow is walking towards me. Right behind her is a boar. He's in rut, popping his teeth. I planned on letting them both walk past me and shoot the boar as he quarters away. She walked past me at 10 yards and then spooked (6th sense). I drew back and watched them both run off to 25 yards and stop to see what spooked her. He was quartering away and I double lunged him. First two arrows out of that Guardian and two animals are on the ground.

The area was inaccessable by vehicle so I left both hogs on the hill for the night. Here's Al and I before the packing job.

Dave shot a turkey the next morning and then another one the next morning. Both nice tom's.

I tried like hell to shoot a Turkey but couldn't put it together. I'm gonna save my blown opportunity story for a campfire somewhere. Next year we are going the first week of turkey season. From my experience it's better the first week. Here's my setup.

Al was feeling kinda down because of the miss and we wern't seeing many hogs. He's gone from a Sierra Club backpacker to a hog killin machine. He hunts his ass off to bring home the bacon and was rewarded on the last night. Just look at that smile. Yeah, the scope bit him between the eyes!!

We have taken bigger on this ranch but this guy had some choppers. He had a bum leg and was thin for his size. I wish I shot him with my bow. Here is a pic of our traditional hog tree. We always have been curious about their live weight so every time we can, we weigh them whole. Al's hog weighed 260#, guts and all, 200# gutted. About 25% for the guts. My sow weighed 160# gutted and my boar weighed 180# gutted. We didn't weigh the turkeys. Ed F

Oh my- what a story, what photos, what a camp, what a great slice of heaven, really great hogs! SWEET HUNT, congrats buddy, you made it sound easy, but I know how much it takes to hunt that hard. Get some ice on that scope kiss. God that hurts.

Great post. Private land, first class accomodations, everyone gets in on the action... Doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks.

Dude, Nice work! You said those were big, but those are huge! What a great way to break in a bow!

Need an RV washer for the next trip?

Thanks. Yeah , thats a diaper, kinda. It's a game bag tied over the belly to keep the flies and bees out. We hang the hogs til the last morning before we skin and quarter them. Ed F

You leave the hides on for the whole weekend? How does the meat smell after hangin that long with the hide on?

After seeing all the critters ticks ,lice bugs of all kinds on the hide. my guess it might not tase like pork any more, bug skirt or not.

Best tasting wild hog you ever had. I been doing this a while and believe this to be the best way. The hide doesn't change the taste at all. Keeps the meat from drying out. IMO. The longest we leave them hanging is two or three days. My kids will eat both these hogs before I down a deer in August!! Ed F
