I went up to my ranch in Lake County this morning to see if the recent wet weather would get the hogs moving. I saw plenty of fresh sign, but unfortunately nothing on the hoof. I did find that some d-bag had trespassed on to the property and stole the two game cams that I had running and have used to source the videos I've posted here in the past. If anyone sees someone trying to sell a couple of Bushnell Trophy cams in Lake County please let me know. How annoying.

Time to get some new cameras and put them out, this time watching for trespassers instead of critters. I really like the Trophy Cams - great battery life and small size for a bit over $100. Anyone got any other favorites?

I did shoot a muskrat so it wasn't a totally wasted day...

Get one that you can put a heavy duty lag in to a tree and put a locking cable around. Worth the money if you have ever had one stolen.

Hide in rocks and called stumps down low pointing up like the cams used to record illegal immigrants. The dirtbag may be tempted to take one off a tree and carefully scan all surrounding trees looking for others but not on the ground.

Use Cop Dots on your cams. I'm liking the new Moultries 880 and 990 blackout. The flash range is awesome and pics good. Video is HD w sound. I just had one stolen too, I usually have a camera in overwatch on the 2nd one but this time I didn't so no pic of thief.

This thing looks pretty cool (pictured below): "Spypoint Tiny-W2." Apparently you can bury the "black box" and the pics can be retrieved from it if the cam is stolen. It would probably get a close-up of the thief's face! Too bad its over $200 on amazon. I use some $70 trail cameras made by "Hunten."

Bummer on the cameras. Too bad the thieves didn't show up on the other camera.

I keep coming back to the Bushnells. Tough to beat the size and price. Cabelas had a few sales recently where you could get the 5mp for $79 after rebate. I picked up 4. I hate spending a lot of $ on cameras that could get stolen.

I started using these for mounts. The traditional straps around the tree make them too obvious to see where these are easier to hide. I rattle-caned some brown primer on them to get rid of the all black. I've put them in a number of places, even up on limbs, looking down on a trail. They disappear for the most part.

That really really sucks man. Happened to me too.

I love my Primos Truth cams. Just the 35's work fine. You can buy them refurbished for super cheap at Natchez.com

I dont think they have the old standard ones anymore (they were $50) but they have the newer ultra ones for a bit more. Have to be the simplest to use cam out there.

Sorry bro I feel your pain.

Thanks dwikkles - good suggestion. I have an old TC 46 that I liked but hated the big form factor and D cells. Reading reviews on some of the 35's and some say they are noisy - is this so? If not I'll get 4 of them - like that they're half the price of the others I was going to get.

I've had good luck with the original Primos TC 35 also. I say the "original", because they also sell a newer "ultra" 35. The original can be had for $99., the newer "ultra" goes for $119. The moultrie 880 rocks, but it usually sells for $149. If it's not urgent, wait for them to go on sale, then buy a few of them. Good luck!

Uhhh, i guess you can hear them "shutter click" within about 5-10ft or so. But I get plenty of pictures so it must not bother them too bad. SOmetimes they look at the camera.

FYI the Ultra versions take AA's :)

Thanks - I just ordered three. Gonna set them up to try to get video of a no-good, thieving, poaching, tresspassing SOB. If so, I'll post it all over the internet and deliver to the Lake County Sheriff!

I've had good luck with the original Primos TC 35 ... can be had for $99.

Rgr that, good cam for the cash. Just under $80 on Amazon right now, free shipping. They're large and chew D batteries, but decent mileage for it.

Good luck with those thieves. If you catch any I'd like to hear how it went. Happens too much.
