Awesome day in Lone Pine yesterday with Kyrah(my 8 year old daughter).left Bakersfield abour 3:50am and arrived in Lone Pine about 6:30am we were set up and glassing the river bottom by 6:45. We didn't see anything other than raccoons and coyotes in the morning, took a hour nap around 11:30 then found a spot on the Owens River loaded with small mouth bass we caught 5 keeper sized and 10 small ones. Threw them all back. Went back out at 3:30 and kyrah spotted a elk @700 yards. Drove to within 250 yards, it was a nice 5x5 with a cow.We then drove down the road and another bull which might of been a 6x6 he was hauling a$$ for cover. We grabbed a bite, then Went back to where we started that morning, as we're driving Kyrah spotted a few elk in a clearing, we found the gate and drove back towards them and could only get to 550 yards. Watched a rag horn, a spike, and a cow then decided to practice getting in bow range. Got to 159 yards and all 3 went into the tules. I looked around and spotted a small 5x5 and 4x4 170 yards away, had the Wind in my favor and cover so I stalked to 50 yards. As I was behind cover I look to the left and 225 yards away is the daddy bull, a huge 6x6 I only saw him for 5 seconds then he was gone. Then I was winded by the 4x4. I let a bugle out and both elk decided to see what I was. One got within 42 yards and the other 39 yards and both were broadside. They would run off then come back did this for about 5 minutes. the bigger of the two foot stomped me a few times. they were both within bow range and I could Could of double lunged both of them. Overall a great day This was the first of my up close experiences and I can't wait for sept 6th heading up then the 8th( opening day)
If anyone is gonna be up that way I'm gonna be stayin at lake Diaz. Ill have a cold one or two for any of you on here. ( See other thread for pictures)
