Straits State Park reopens

August 11, 2004

Officials at Straits State Park in St. Ignace today announced the park will allow limited campground use for the remainder of the camping season.

The campground has been closed since last fall for construction. Electrical service was upgraded, and many sites were expanded to create more “pull through” sites for large camper vehicles.

Park officials said 127 of the park’s sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The park will be fully open next spring, and will return to the state’s Campground Reservation System then.

“We are excited to welcome visitors back into the campground,” said District Supervisor Gary Ellenwood. “The campsite improvements will create a better camping experience for decades to come, and the new configuration of the campground provides a much better view of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge.”

Visitors are reminded that restoration efforts in many areas of the park will require visitor cooperation, using caution around areas with new grass and avoiding portions of the park still under construction.

Woo Hooo more room for us trolls!
