My last public land hog was back in May, so another one before the fall season starts was really cool, but I wasn't really planning on hunting. I went back to a hell hole to retrieve a couple of items I had left in the field. I only brought my bow (just in case), and backpack as an afterthought - no game cart, no meat hauler, very little gear or water.

After finding my items (and making a fair amount of noise), I had a little time before I had to head home so I went for a "little" hike. Not really looking to shoot anything, but I brought my bow anyway - I just replaced my stabilizer and I wanted to get the "feel" of it, I even stopped a few times, just to pull the string back and visualize a bit.

The afternoon cooled down a fair bit and I was just enjoying the evening hike and solitude when I heard a branch snap, and then a grunt!! A branch snapping, no biggie, but a grunt..!? Game on !!

Since I wasn't really prepared for a hunt, I had no binos with me, but I did have my range finder. Standing still to listen, I started ranging trees and listening at the same time. The grunts turned to snorts and branches kept breaking. At 25 yards a lone pig walked (and rooting) into a shooting lane. The new stabilizer worked perfectly and my arrow found the sweet spot. Both lungs punctured and the far side elbow shattered, the pig was still able to run the better part of fifty yards before piling up at the end of a great blood trail.

Killing hogs in hell holes is not a lot of fun on the way out.

Bruce -
No joke - I'll take 'em. It just doesn't get easier, but that's public land hunting.
