I just mounted an elk that has a strange nose, instead of the fleshy nose pad extending up and above the nostrils, he has hair growing in its place.
First pic is of the strange elk.
Second pic is of a normal elk.

Bet he could push through the snow to browse without getting his sniffer cold better than the rest! Maybe it's evolution and we will see more and more like that in cold climates?
interesting nonetheless...

Glass-Eye, I have seen a couple of bulls like this. It really is kind of neat!

It's actually pretty common to see variances such as these. I agree with richardoutwest in that it makes each one unique in it's own way.

very cool....kind of likes the genes that can get turned on or off determing hair on our nuckles (between nuckle and tip of finger)....there must be a gene for hair on that portion of their body...

very intersting thanks for the pics. maybe he scarred up his nose trying to get all that white stuff out of his nostrils.
