Still no luck on my 2002 quest for a wall hanger.

Was rained out on Tuesday morning. I can handle some light rain, but temperatures were in the low 40's and it was raining quite hard.

I was sitting in the truck waiting for it to stop and around 8:30, decided to check in to the room, change clothes and get back out around 11:00 or so till dark. On my ride down the gravel road leaving our property, I noticed a flash of white in the horse pasture. It was a doe running full out, she jumped the fence and ran it to one of our CRP fields. I continued down the road and looked to my left and saw a dandy buck standing along a fencerow in the same pasture. He started walking in the direction that the running doe took, stopped and looked behind him. Standing along the fencerow was a doe, at which time he turned and ran over to her.

That was enough for me. I drove back over to my hunting spot, did a clothes change in the rain and headed down to my stand. I was hoping the buck & doe would cross where the first doe did, bringing them close to my stand. No luck, never saw them again.

To make a long story short, I saw one fork horn buck under my stand and one doe over the two days. However, walking to my stand, I jumped up two different average size bucks and a couple of does. I guess there is now easy way to get into some of my stands without spooking up something.

This is a new rub that was busted out over the last week. This is near where I am hunting for the big buck.

After the rain, all of the tracks and scrapes were washed out. The following morning, I found the big boys tracks and took the below photo. Along side of it is a smaller track (probably a doe) so it seems like the bucks are staying close to the does but not chasing them just yet. I also found about 4 new scrapes the day after the rainstorm. That is another sign that the bucks are still trying to entice the does into breeding and they are not ready yet.

That’s it for now. I going to hunt next Monday and heading up Wednesday thru the opening weekend of firearms season.
