I realize that as part of the checks and balances in our government a Supreme Court Justice is appointed for life. But is there any circumstance and/or any way to have them removed?

Let's say they go senile or develop Alheimer's. Maybe even have a debilitating accident that renders them vegitative or comatose.

Or let's say they start doing off-the-wall stuff like openly promoting communism or renounce their citizenship. Anything we could do?

I'm watching Sotomayor give lip service to the panel knowing full well she can say anything she wants to because it's almost inevitable at this point that she'll be confirmed. And once she's in, she can do anything she wants with her 11.1% vote, knowing it's FINAL in the US court system! :skeered:

Belch,

I share your pain. We have a democratic legislative and executive branch and now the prez is trying to appoint a clearly democractic supreme court justice. The guy is knocking the last leg out of a three legged stool. It'll be the people that hang after the sudden collapse.

There was a reason our forefathers set up our government with three branches of government and it was to prevent exactly what is happening now.

There is no clearer indication of the contempt the prez has for our government and the people as his current attempt to rule all three branchs of government.

I fear we may never recover from this travesty... this mockery of the will of the people.

Never in my life have I seen such blatant disregard for the voice of the voters. Every letter I write to my elected officals is returned with a politely worded "too bad, I'm gonna do what I think".

The current administration is power hungry and is rail roading legislation through congress as fast as they can, consequences be damned, in hopes that they can accomplish their agenda before the voter wakes up.

I fear my children will never know the freedoms I've had. They will be legislated, cuddled and bred to pay taxes for the new rulers.

Which mess? The mortgage implosion that blew out the base of our economy? The one caused by really stupid mortgages to people that should never, ever, been allowed to have one. You know, the mortgages crammed down by throats of lending institution by Republican lawmakers and their activist group allies??

Sorry, I believe I am mistaken, it was the Democratic lawmakers and their (ACORN) allies that strong-armed lenders into doing the bad loans. Called them racists for not giving money to people that would never ever pay it back.

The Dems had control of Congress in 2006. They had two years in which to actually get somthing moving forward under a President that didn't know what the heck veto meant. They could have put the brakes on then and there from evil, bad Republican policies.

But what did they do?

They let it manure pile build into a huge stinkin pile by election time. That "idiot" Bush tried to tell Congress that the mortgage to the folks who shouln't have one thing was going to blow up. And they told those Bush's guy to pound sand.

And then they took charge. Had a big hole o'debt. did they stop and say, "Woah, you know, we don't have any money at the moment, so let' pause, see where we can trim the fat. Let's live within our budget and start back filling this hole."

No. They went out and got the buggest excavator they could find and are made the hole, bigger, wider, deeper than ever. And they are still digging.

I was pissed the GOP for much of the 2000-2008 period. Because they spent money hand over han trying to act like the Dems. So I would say that yes, there is a lot of blame to give the GOP for what they did. But it in absolutely in any way shape or form excuse what the Dems are doing now.

8 years of Republican mess? It'll take 80 (if allowed) to clean up this gigantic sweep of socialism employed by the Democrats. Welfare states, federal medical aid, unrestrained immigration, unbacked monetary fund system...

.02 This is way more than 8 years in the making. BTW, BHO has continued some GWB policies that aren't exactly helping this country.

You can't be that oblivious.....

I am not sure what Obama did wrong in appointing Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. The people elected a Democratic party president and enough Democratic Senators that now equals 60 vs 40 which in theory should prevent any fillabuster unless of course Mitch can get some Dems to defect.

Has Sen Demint said at the hearings "elections matter" if the American people didn't want Supreme Court justices left of say Scalia et al then they should of voted for the Repubs.

Until and unless the Repubs start getting non-white voters to vote for their candidates they are doomed. White voters now make up 76% of the electorate and that share will decline greatly in our lifetime. I amnot saying th Repubs can't win presidential elections in the future but not if they are headed the way they are now.

Anyone, dim, rhino whatever who claims the 2nd amendment is NOT a fundamental right is whack and an enemy of the citizens.

First of all I am not a lawyer but I do read the Constitution regularly and as I understand it a Supreme Court Justice can be impeached just like the President. It would require a majority vote in the House to impeach them and then a 2/3'rds vote in the Senate to convict them. They could then be removed from office. I think the Vice President would preside over the Senate procedures.
Historically this is only brought up where ethics violations are being considered, not when their rulings are being questioned. No supreme court justice has ever been removed so it would have to be a major event I would think.
Please correct me if I am mistaken or missed something, I would rather be corrected than remain ignorant.:patiotic-wavin-flag

There seems to be a pattern in barrys selections of czars, cabinet positions and admin posts with people of questionable ethics, backgrounds or experience. Sotomayor is just the latest and her own words and actions speak volumes of what we can expect to see, especially in a lifetime position like a supreme court justice.
IMHO, it's all about politics and party over actual justice and impartiality...
