Man, you live in God's country! Surf fishing along the Central Coast is uncrowded and productive, and the fish are safe to eat. You should do well North or South of the pier catching Perch, Smelt, Halibut, rays and sharks, depending on the season. Use fresh, local-caught bait (sandcrabs, mussels, clams, strips of mackerel caught off the pier at night, etc) when you can, or buy bloodworms from a local tackle shop. If you prefer artificials, I have found that a 2-6 oz bright tin-plated torpedo shaped sinker, with a treble hook attached with a split ring, and a white feather crappie jig trailing 18 inches behind, can be deadly in that area. For live baiting perch, use a slider sinker stopped with a swivel and a red glass bead, and a #6 Kahle hook hanging out 12-18 inches. 1/2 inch sandcrabs, hooked through the shell towards the back, will outperform any bait except bloodworms. For the best site in the area, look for anyplace with waves and water.
