I am looking to take the Grandsons on an elk hunt in SW Colorado. Does anyone have any
recommendations for an outfitter? I am considering a pack in hunt or maybe a drop camp
DIY hunt, but haven't ruled anything out.
Thanks
Don

My dad, uncle, gramps an I do a DIY elk/deer hunt in SW colorado every year. No need for an outfitter or drop camp to be successful. Just find were others are hunting and explore a little. One hint that can improve success dramatically is to find areas that are off limits to vehicles. Generally, good hunting is only about an hour climb each morning into great areas away from the rest of the campers and their Quads. Maybe take a look around Dolores and the surrounding NO Vehicle areas on the map. I dont think this area necessitates an outfitter or a drop camp.

How far into the Southwest part of the state?

I have been pretty happy with Dark Timber Outfitters, out of Montrose. http://www.darktimberlodge.com
