It seems like the really slick thing to do would be to get a "tablet PC", load some topo software and data on it, and plug in a GPS (perhaps one with a PCMCIA or CF card interface). unfortunately, tablet PCs are rare and still expensive;

Toshiba PenCentra 200CRF
touchscreen interface
Windows CE
8.9" x 6.5" x 1.3"
2 pounds (0.9 Kg) with battery
$1,585 MSRP
color 640 x 480 screen is supposedly outdoor-readable

Two pounds is a bit heavy for hiking, but otherwise it would be a cool thing to have. Seems like just the thing that Jesse ought to acquire and field-test for us.

I have been tempted to acquire one of those GPS plugin receivers for my Casioppeia but the screen seems much too small to be of much use. The tablets seem to be about the right size in terms of length, width, and height, but I sure would like to see the price and weight come down.

MikeSTH did a review of hooking up his GPS to his Palm I believe it was. I'll see if I can get him to drop by and psot his article, it was good reading.
