Newbie question, but should I be a distance away from the car and bone out the animal in the field to bring it back, how do I affix the tag to it? Is that still necessary?

I think thats a great question. I have one to add. At what point after the kill do you have to the animal tagged? Before boning it out? And does that tag and what ever piece its attatched to have to ride with you home?

Immediately the animal shall be tagged. I do a lot of backpack hunting and I talked to a game warden. He said as long as the tag is filled out with the mest you are good. If its a buck attach it to the horns. There is no need to pack out bones over a long distance. I can see doing it for a short distance though. If you are nervous about it you can attach the tag to its ear, cut it off and put it in a small Ziploc with the meat.

Most states require proof of sex attached to any game animal, tag should be attached to that part. Tag theoretically is supposed to be filled out as soon as animal is found, even before field dressing but absolutely before the carcass is moved. Tag is required until game is at a commercial proccessor or in the freezer at home if you do your own. I keep mine in the freezer with the meat, saves a hassle if it ever comes into question. But, as Beastmode said if tag is filled out completely, notched, whatever most wardens will accept it as tagged. Now go get em.

If I am out in the field and I need to drag the hog or bone it out. I will fill the tag out and keep it with me. I will not put it on the animal. Even on the way out the tag will stay with me. One time when I had the tag on the hog's leg it came off and I almost lost the tag. That is why I keep it in my pocket while enroute to my designations.

I have had problems in the past with the tag falling off during pack in trips. So what I do is carry a small zip-lock bag and duct tape. I tag the animal as specified in the regs, slip the bag over it, and then duct tape it down. I have never lost a tag doing this. I have had one complaint, from a warden, but after pointing out that the animal was legally tagged and the regs were all met, I cut off the tape and he validated my tag and went on his way.

Hunterdoug, yep, but if it's not attached to a hindquarter some way some wardens might not accept it as proof. Leave it attached with a small patch of hide and your are solid.

There are some good answer here and some not so good answers and it matters what state you are in. If you are hunting in CA please read the following:

This is copied from dfg web site d7zoneinfo2013.doc

Successful hunters are reminded to immediately fill out both portions of the tag and permanently mark the date of kill; attach the tag to the antlers, or ear if antlerless; have the tag validated and countersigned; and return the completed report card portion to, or file an online harvest report (see highlighted area below on Internet Harvest Reporting) with DFW within 30 days of taking a deer.

I hope the following comment is taken in the spirit intended, but this is very basic information and I would encourage you to not just accept legal answers from people on a message board but also find the supporting documentation in the regulations. If for example warden tickets you for attaching the the tag the the leg of your deer, telling the judge that "some guy on Jesse's said attaching the tag to the leg would be acceptable", wont fly as a defense.

Good Hunting

If hunting in CA cutting off the weener won't help much.
