Hey folks,
This just occurred to me after reading through a few posts lately, both here and other places. A lot of guys feel constrained from mentioning the outfitter they've just hunted with... regardless of whether the hunt was a success or a negative experience. Some of them are afraid they'll get their hand slapped for "pimping" the outfitter, and others may be afraid of negative repercussions for discussing a bad experience.
I'm here to tell you that not only is it OK to name names, it's better for everybody if you do.
First of all, the advertising policy on JHO is designed to keep outfitters from coming in and plugging their operations. It's not fair for some outfitters to pay for advertising here and others to come in and get it free.
But, that's different from an honest, first-person review. Part of the value and promise of this site is the opportunity for members to share information, including outfitters' names and details about the hunt. You may or may not want to share what you paid, since you might have received a special rate, but everything else is fair game. You may be helping out another hunter who's trying to make a decision about going with that guide.
Of course we're aware that some outfitters are apt to send in "shills" to pose as customers, and that's a risk that all sites like JHO have to take. That's a different issue though.
Anyway, if you hunted with a guide or outfitter and want to write it up, PLEASE don't be afraid to share the name of the outfitter or guide. If you had a bad experience, be honest and give the facts. Maybe they will be here to offer a rebuttal, but that's fair enough. The readers can sort it out for themselves.
