Just got my first bear tag for this year as we have been seeing quite a few in our area. If i am successfull i would like to have the hide tanned and i was just wondering what precautions need to be taken during the skinning process. What is the best way to preserve the hide until taken to a taxidermist? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
chris

Keep it cold and dry. Heat and moisture will promote decay. Use dry ice rather than regular ice and freeze it as soon as possible. No driving around displaying it.

Like Glass Eye said get it cooled fast and delivered quickly. Try not to wad it up while warm because bears will hold heat. The other precaution is to skin it correctly, for rugs be sure to make straight cuts, down the center of the belly and the middle of the underside of the front legs. For the rear legs cut along the Harline to center of rear pad. This is a great link for bear skinning. http://www.outdoorsdirectory.com/magazine/blbcare.htm
