Teachers and Youth Leaders Invited To Learn Outdoor/Rec Curriculum

CHEYENNE -- Wyoming teachers and youth leaders interested in the outdoors are invited to a June workshop about an outdoor recreation curriculum that includes firearm education, fishing, canoeing, outdoor survival and many more activities and concepts which stress the ethical use of the outdoors.

Outdoor Recreation Education Opportunities or OREO as it is commonly known in schools, was developed by the Game and Fish Department in 1995 to help give youth hands-on outdoor experiences that can be enjoyed over a lifetime.

The seventh annual workshop will be held June 23-27 at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp southeast of Dubois.

“OREO gives teachers the ability to transfer their classroom into the great outdoors while introducing students to educational and fun activities,” said Patty Stevens, OREO coordinator.

She said OREO, which also includes cross-country skiing, wildlife photography, orienteering and first aid, is designed so teachers can implement the activities that fit their expertise and geographic area into their existing curriculums.

Teachers attending the workshop are eligible for University of Wyoming off-campus credit or Wyoming Department of Education recertification credit. Applications are available by calling (800) 842-1934 and must be returned to the G&F by April 30.
