I've heard that there is a ranch within a ranch (or something on that order) out in Tehachapi, that has wild boar hunting for something like $500, which includes the hog, two nights lodging and meals. And, if you don't get a shot at a hog, it's only a $200 weekend for you. And they only allow 6 hunters per weekend.

Sounds too good to me. Anyone know how close is this info to being true?

There has been talk about a fenced ranch there that has hogs following the trucks in looking to get fed. I can't remember the name. I'm sure the answers are coming.

Just a heads up, I am invited on a hunt on a new ranch in Coalinga. The owner is a vet who works on a buddy's dairy. He's just getting started but said he'll do hunts pretty cheap. I won't vouch for it yet but I'll make a post hunt story and will explain how being a sponsor on JHO will be a good thing.

The ranch you are talking about is the same owner(s) as the Big Horn Ranch in Riverside. Its a joke. I can't remember the name.

I believe its Cedar Canyon Ranch. There's some info in the "hunting guides" section. There were quite a few posts regarding this ranch in the past. From what I hear its a 1 sqr mile ranch and is put and take. The hogs are full Russian and are of good size. They also have exotics and bison if desired. They are located just on the border of Tejon Ranch and have the same type of terrain--read, challenging.

Haven't hunted there before, but it sounds like a good deal.

Hope this helps.

Just a headsup...
Save your money and go with a reputable outfitter or guide. And there are loads of them. Tejon Ranch has good prices, is in the same area, all wild free range animals, is very big so as to allow a little freedom from others, is very well run... There are many good guides on the central coast that can get you into pigs, then it's up to you to do your job.

Thanks, EMS, I'll see if I can get a number, sounds good.

As far as the Big Horn ranch, I've been there. One time, never again, not for me. After seeing what was going on, I chose not to shoot (that said, both my partners shot their fat domestic hogs, I just wasn't interested one bit in shooting a farm hog). They had exotics that I stalked up on, almost hit one big Rambolet with a rock, that thing must've been someone's pet. Not my thing, but maybe OK for a first time hunter.......

Freediver,

Cedar Canyon is owned by the same owners as Big Horn. If Big Horn is not for than neither is Cedar Canyon. It's a joke, don't waste your money. Try Tejon without a guide. All free range, wild animals and you have a pretty decent chance of getting a hog if you get out of your car and get in the canyons. You can definately do it yourself there. I've been to Tejon once and all four of us got our hogs. We spent Friday afternoon putting miles on our cars to get familiar with the land and get a game plan. Saturday and Sunday it was game on. Two guys even had bows and were able to get a shot off. It's wild game, not fed or fenced on 275,000 acres. That's your best bet if you want a good challenging hunt without a guide and still want to have a decent chance. Good luck and my advice would be to stay as far away from Cedar Canyon and Big Horn as you can. It's those type of places that are giving us hunters a bad name.
