Well my dad and I finally made it up to Tejon this month for an archery pig hunt. We arrived at 5PM on Thursday and set up camp. Then we set off to look at a spot a friend had told us about. We parked the truck at the top of a small road down into a canyon we would hunt. I started hiking down and noticed my dad was still changing into his hunting clothes. Not wanting to wait for him and loose valuable daylight, I continued on thinking he would catch up soon. Well I kept going down into the canyon and thought about waiting for him, but the area had so much promising sign I couldn't help but continue.
After about 3/4 mile down the road into this canyon I look across and see several GROUPS of pigs feeding on the opposite hillside about 250 yards from my position. I turn into book it to the pigs/slowly stalk mode and get to the bottom of the canyon where there is a small creek and tons of manitza. The place is LOADED with fresh pig sign.
I knew there was a small group of decent sized pigs just up the other side of the canyon, so I begin to climb. After about only 40 yards of a slope, I look up and see the backs of pigs in the grass above me.
Automatically I grab my rangefinder and range the closest (and biggest) pig. 21 yards. I take one more step forward and draw my bow.
The lone sow turns broadside, but I wanted a better shot. Instantly, she quarters away and I send an arrow right where I wanted it to go.
The group of pigs takes off up the hill, except the one with the arrow in her side. She starts heading downhill, but after maybe 25 yards slows and falls dead. My arrow took out both lungs and stopped on the hide of the opposite shoulder.
MY FIRST BOW KILL!!
Pumped and over a mile down from the truck and my dad, I start making my way up just as it starts to get dark. I return and tell my dad about my pig as soon as he quit lecturing me about going off on my own without the two-way radio.
We decide to drive the truck down to the opposite side of the canyon for a short drag/recovery to the truck in the morning.
But it didn't work out that way.
6AM the next morning we run into a major problem. A fallen tree blocks the road down at the TOP of the canyon.
After gutting, skinning, cutting in half and making two round trips up and down that nice steep canyon we managed to kill 7 hours.
Had that unmovable tree not been in the road we would have been outta there by 9AM, but noooo. Left the front gate in the 2:30 heat
Thanks for taking the time to read about my first successful archery hunt. I learned a lot of strategies on this site. One thing I can't figure out is posting pictures so when I eventually get them on my computer I will most likely need to email them to someone.
Ooh and what a rush bowhunting is!!!
