Heya fellas,

Just thought I'd pass along a reminder that the JHO/Tejon PORs are scheduled and upcoming. The first hunt is our first Winter POR, in January, followed by a February archery-only hunt, and then the regular late May POR.

Applications for the February hunt are here and ready to be claimed. See the pinned post above for details and dates.

Barbara just informed me that the applications for the January POR are on the way. If you'd like to join that hunt, you can go ahead and start sending those emails now, but first READ THE INFORMATION IN THE PINNED SECTION. That will answer most of your questions.

Emails MUST:
  • Include "JHO Hunt" in the subject line
  • Include the Month and Type of Hunt (Archery or POR) in the Subject line (if you don't do this, your message may very well get deleted by my SPAM filters).
  • Include your Mailing address
  • Include your primary phone number
  • include your email address
  • include the number of hunters in your group and their names

Just received the yearly Wild Pig Management Hunt Application from Tejon and noticed they now have a Private hunt (Formerly known as Ham Slams) for $500. Looks like you can book them on a Mon, Wed, or Fri and must have a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 hunters. Hope this price doesn't reflect what we'll be paying for the Ham Slams and hope they don't phase out what we've been doing for the last 4 years.

Hey Mark,

They've actually been doing that $500 ham slam all along, so no, it won't impact our hunts. If we're unable to get my minimum of 25 hunters, then we have the option of switching to a "Ham Slam" format and the higher price or cancelling the weekend.

As of right now, there's definitely no plan to phase out the PORs, private (like ours) or public. They are changing the way they run, and I think the public PORs will start alternating North and South side instead of both sides (last I heard...haven't read the flier yet), but again, that's no impact on our hunts.

Our January hunt will have a slightly modified hunt zone, and I'll share the details of that as soon as the new map arrives (this weekend, I hope). It shouldn't impact most of us in any negative way, and from what Barbara told me, it may open up a little bit of country that we couldn't hunt before.

Hey guys...make sure you read the directions before sending me an email for this hunt. My spam filter is pretty aggressive, so if your email doesn't come in right, it's likely to end up in the round file.

I sorta expected more activity for this January hunt. Remember, if we don't make 25 hunters, the price goes up to $500... or we cancel. That would make me cry. Ya'll don't wanna see that, do ya?

Speck,
I'm interested, but the only thing I'm concerned about (probably some others also) is the weather in Jan./Feb. at Tejon. Last time I hunted there in Jan. is was raining sideways and the rain was frozen. If you don't get enough interest, would you (and others) be interested in doing the Dec. 14-16 Tejon POR hunt....? It's $450.00 and although it's not a JHO sponsored hunt, we could make it one - and the weather almost always cooperates in mid-December (cold but usually not wet). Just something to ponder.....

I sent in an email with no response - maybe it got trashed. I'm definetly interested in this hunt! Could also bring one or two others if I get the info. in time.

Thanks Jesse,

George

Wild1, if you wanna hunt the December hunt you need to get your apps in to Barbara ASAP. It's already well on the way to filling up, due to a minor error that allowed a fair number of guys to sign up early. They're only gonna hunt one side of the property at a time this year, rather than both North and South simultaneously. Dunno why...nobody told me 'cause I didn't ask.

I was considering the Dec. hunt in addition to January, but those plans fell through...which is just as well. I'm spending way too much time in the field this fall, and with Christmas travel I really shouldn't be going to Tejon Ranch too.

I agree that the weather will very likely be a factor in January, and this JHO hunt is totally experimental. If it doesn't work out, I probably won't schedule another winter hunt...but will stick with our regular spring hunt (which we're having also). The January hunt is in response to "popular demand", and is the earliest private POR I could get.

With the current weather patterns, I'd be a lot more concerned about the December hunt than usual, by the way. I could be wrong, and probably am, but I think it's likely to be worse in December than it will be the rest of the winter. We'll see, though...

As a sort of an aside, the area we'll be hunting in January will be a bit different from the usual. In short, we'll have the majority of the south side, but also a real good chunk of the North on this hunt. That will possibly allow some of us to hit Tejon Canyon or some of the other more accessible areas if the weather cuts off access to our regular areas. It's a little tricky for me to share good details on this right now, but it looks to me like we're getting a pretty sweet deal.

The May hunt will be back to the regular South Side area that we usually hunt, by the way.

George, and others... If you wanna join this hunt, please send me an email with JHO POR and the month you want to hunt in the subject line. In your email, include real names, the number of hunters, a snail mail address, phone number, etc., as described in the "Directions" posts. Please don't just send me an email saying you're interested. That doesn't help me a bit. Depending on how busy I am, I may or may not follow up on it.

Oh, and I'm not Jesse.

Thanks Speckmisser,

Sorry about the confusion on my part. One question if you could help. I've hunted a fair amount (waterfowl and upland) but never anything with 4 legs - so is it possible to hook up with other hunters or would I be strictly on my own?

Thanks again for the information!

Acousticmood,
Last May's JHO POR at Tejon was my first "four legged" hunt, and I can give you assurance that this group of guys are all about helping eachother in every way. Although many filled their tag on Friday evening, I saw guys staying until Sunday to enjoy the camaradarie, and to help other newbes get on their first pig. They took guys they just met to honey-holes. Guys were pitching in to help with difficult recoveries (I'll divulge their names at the hunt...incognito of course). One Track spends most of his time at the skining rack helping skin everyone's pigs (with Swiss Army knife in one hand and a beer in the other...yes he did almost cut off his finger when the lockless blade of his Swiss Army closed on him...maybe thats what the beer is for, a novicaine and disinfectant of sorts). If they know it's someone's first pig hunt, they are all about making it one to remember. Good guys with a love for the sport...and the love of turning other guys on to pig hunting. This is why the January hunt will be better than the December hunt...it's JHO hunters.

Warning: there is an unspoken rule about newbes halling other's pigs out of hell-holes...what's that all about?

Anyway, join us!

All three hunts are priced at $450 this year. That's a minor increase over the $400 we've been paying.

The January hunt is run like the standard POR (except only our group). There is a maximum of 50 hunters, and a minimum of 25 (to get the special price... if we come in under 25, the price goes up to $500). No lodging is provided. We'll primarily be hunting a "modified" section of the South side. Most of the south side that we're familiar with will be open, with some exceptions (to be described in the orientation session). The map for this hunt also includes part of the North side, so if the weather is bad we'll have some access to the "easier" roads in Tejon Canyon. There are some logistics issues that will have to be arranged in this case, but I'm working those out. I'm hoping the weather holds for us, but it can definitely be an issue. You SHOULD consider this in your decision to attend this hunt. The place can still be hunted in bad weather, but things get a little more difficult. 4WD is a big plus for this hunt, although if the weather is bad many roads are impassible to anything except a goat or a hog.

The February hunt is an archery-only hunt on the North side. The max hunters on this one is 12, and minimum is 8. If we have under 8, the hunt is cancelled. This one includes the cabin and food, as well as a Tejon rep (guide) to prep meals and provide direction. If he feels like it, he may get out in the field with us, but that is NOT part of the deal.

The May hunt is the one we always have, and you can do a search throughout this forum for details about what that hunt is like. It's run as a POR for up to 50 hunters, and is probably the best time to get out and see this ranch. The hunt is on the South Side. This is easily the best hunt of the bunch, in my opinion, and would be the best opportunity for a new pig hunter. Oh yeah.. and it's also the most likely to fill up.

Newbies fear not... there are plenty of folks who've hunted this place a lot, and everyone is willing to help out to some extent. You may not get all the honey holes, but you'll get good direction (if not hands on support), and there's always someone around to help with recovery and field processing (dressing/skinning).
