Is anyone going up to Tejon this coming weekend for the North archery management hunt? I know this may need to be in the archery hunting section, but I figured everyone looks here.

It will be my first time on Tejon and I don't have any detailed maps, any good suggestions?

Well, the weather is not looking very good, 70% chance of rain in mid-30s with a nice breeze and highs in the low 40s on Saturday with rain.

I've bowhunted it 3 times now and only one pig. It is a tough hunt. 1,000's of acres for the critters to roam and lots of hills and valleys. They won't move much in the rain, but it would be worth your time to be in the field waiting it out because when it lets up, they'll be out rooting in the soft soil. I got my pig just after a long day of heavy rain. It stopped raining, the fog rolled in and all pigs were on deck!! It is a very confusing place as well. Even their maps don't show great detail, so a GPS isn't a bad idea. I got lost a few times during my first couple mgmt hunts. To keep it easy the first day, the main road that takes you in is easy to navigate (hopefully you have 4wd or chains). Stay on it - you will go past a big house on the right with fencing around it. Keep going and you'll come to two large pillars (one on each side of the road) with cowboy boots on the top. Keep going and you'll come to a small fork in the road with a pile of large drainage pipes. If you go to the right you can go in a bit and you'll come to an opening on the left that leads to a good sized pasture at the bottom of a mountain. You can try walking in along the bottom of the mountain. If you don't go to the right, keep driving until you come to a cabin with a bunch of antlers on the outside walls. You can hunt around the cabin on both sides of the road. The left side is very mountainous, but holds good pigs. You will do some climbing, but get up in the fingers. If it is clear, get up high and glass, glass, glass. For your first time in, it can be a little overwhelming because it is such a beautiful and immense ranch with lots of roads. Either keep it simple and branch out a little each day or hook up with some other guys that know the ranch and some of the back country areas. It is a great place to hunt, but the mgmt hunts can get a little crowded unless you go to some of the more remote locations. Good luck and enjoy what California looked like many, many years ago.

Thanks Rippin' I appreciate the advice. I think I've talked myself out of it for this weekend though, I'm gonna wait for the rifle management weekend. I've logged many miles on foot in the LPNF and am ready for a ranch hunt, but this weekend just isn't looking good for it. I have a Jeep built very nicely and have used it for many miles of Los Padres; sounds like it would be fun just to drive it on the roads with the rain. ;)
