Tejon Pig Down!

The boy and I went out to Tejon today to fill a pig tag before our offseason passes end this next Sunday. We got into a good boar hog on the south side off of the Lebec gate. After a 150+ yard shot, and a 400 yard tracking job, we found the pig bedded down and put another shot in him. After a nasty drag out of a steep canyon, we had the hog in the car and off to the JHO skinning stand. We had a great day and the pig is already in the hands of Darius for a shoulder mount.

So what are the stats on the weight and size of choppers??? Any specific plan on the meat (ie. sausage, chops, etc.)?

Hey guys, its Jr. here to elaborate on my fathers pig...

Well we showed up right at blue light to a water hole that we knew had pigs. sign everywhere! We couldnt really see anything but when we got closer my dad spotted the larger of two pigs in the mud. Now with the fire, a lot of Tejon still smelt like burnt stuff, so we though our scent wasnt going to be much of a big deal, we were wrong! It happened to be the only place that smelled clean and one little gust of wind got these pigs to start trotting away. My dad set up and fired at about 150 yards. The pig takes off under a little fence and disappears down into a canyon. Well we found blood immediately but it wasnt much and just a few spots all the way to the fence, didnt look like a good hit. Nevertheless, we hit a pig so we were gonna do all we could to get it. we tracked the thing through low bushes and steep hillsides. My dad wanted to give up, but I just felt that it was a good enough hit, so on we went. After about 400 yards I hear my dad who was about 20 yards uphill from me go "uhhhooooohhhoohhhhhh" in a kind of frightened way. I look up and see this pig get up and start runnin towards me so I raise my scattergun with buckshot, but my dad fired and hit him right behind the ear, that dropped him and he started rolling down the hill. Luckily we could get the car down pretty far so we didnt have that much of a drag.

I also wanted to make sure all of you knew that even though it was his pig, his tag, and his gun.....I still had to gut the danged thing!

Pig was heavy, Im not too great at guessing, but it was hell tryin to drag it even to the car.
The thing was really really thick. The cutters were probably about 2-2 1/2" exposed.

We kept the shoulders, the backstraps and one ham...I forgot to tell you that the old man gave it an ass shot.

I guess the old age is really starting to get to him, haha.

§353. Methods Authorized for Taking Big Game.

(a) Except for the provisions of subsections 353(b) through (g), title 14, CCR, big game (as defined by section 350, title 14, CCR) may only be taken by rifles using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding bullets; bow and arrow (see section 354, title 14, CCR, for archery equipment regulations); or wheellock, matchlock, flintlock or percussion type, including "in-line" muzzleloading rifles using black powder or equivalent black powder substitute, including pellets, with single ball or bullet loaded from the muzzle and at least .40 caliber in designation.

(b) Shotguns capable of holding not more than three shells firing single slugs may be used for the taking of deer, bear and wild pigs. In areas where the discharge of rifles or shotguns with slugs is prohibited by county ordinance, shotguns capable of holding not more than three shells firing size 0 or 00 buckshot may be used for the taking of deer only.

© Pistols and revolvers using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding bullets may be used to take deer, bear, and wild pigs.

(d) Pistols and revolvers with minimum barrel lengths of 4 inches, using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding bullets may be used to take elk and bighorn sheep.

(e) Except as provided in subsection 354(j), crossbows may be used to take deer and wild pigs only during the regular seasons.

(f) Under the provisions of a muzzleloading rifle only tag, hunters may only possess muzzleloading rifles as described in subsection 353(a) equipped with open or "peep" type sights only.

(g) Under the provisions of a muzzleloading rifle/archery tag, hunters may only possess muzzleloading rifles with sights as described in subsection 353(f); archery equipment as described in Section 354; or both. For purposes of this subsection, archery equipment does not include crossbows, except as provided in subsection 354(j).

(h) Except as otherwise provided, while taking or attempting to take big game under the provisions of Section 353 or Section 354, Title 14, CCR, it is unlawful to use any device or devices which: 1) throw, cast or project an artificial light or electronically alter or intensify a light source for the purpose of visibly enhancing an animal; or 2) throw, cast or project an artificial light or electronically alter or intensify a light source for the purpose of providing a visible point of aim directly on an animal. Devices commonly referred to as "sniperscopes", night vision scopes or binoculars, or those utilizing infra-red, heat sensing or other non-visible spectrum light technology used for the purpose of visibly enhancing an animal or providing a visible point of aim directly on an animal are prohibited and may not be possessed while taking or attempting to take big game. Devices commonly referred to as laser rangefinders, "red-dot" scopes with self-illuminating reticles, and fiberoptic sights with self illuminating sight or pins which do not throw, cast or project a visible light onto an animal are permitted.

woops......good thing I didnt shoot. I only brought my shotgun cause I didnt have a pig tag and we usually just go for some squirrels and rabbits. At least now I know.
