Sorry for the late report..... i'm still tired after helping my little brother drag the beast he shot SAturday @ 1705 hr. it weighed 189 lb field dressed and had a 44" girth. Thank God I listened to you guys about the rope! My bro shot the pig at the edge of a small gulley and of course the thing had to roll over the side! It took a few hours to pull it up to a tree and secure it there. We came back the next morning and I was able to position my truck within 100' and using tow straps i pulled the pig to safety! This is my bros first big game animal and he along with my father were ecstatic! As we were field dressing the hog we could hear other hogs fighting and eating about 30 to 40 yards away! unbelievable! You could hear the tusks clacking!! We saw lots of deer and coyotes and a 2 x 3 buck with about a 28" spread. The weather was great. We saw other pigs but did not get a shot. According to DonGeivet and Barbara this POR was down on numbers of pigs taken. I believe the North area had the most taken (20) ? The largest may have been one that weighed about 225 field dressed. A great time was had by all. Im doing it again for the March hunt. I found a bedding area that stunk to high heaven and was filled with fresh scat and several beds! Thanks again for your tips and info,,,, pictures forthcoming!
Way to go MNHNTR, Tejon sure is a great place. Went there for the first time last March for the JHP hunt. Don't think anywhere in SoCal has as much game as they do. We saw 15-20 deer everyday, and the turkeys were calling right behind our camp. Also saw elk.
Hopefully we can turn that March hunt into another JHP event.
Hi everyone! My huntin' buddy and I were up at Tejon this past weekend and were hunting the "desert" zone. The hunting was absolutely beautiful but the finding was terrible. Neither of us had ever hunted pigs but we had sucessfully hunted deer for many years so we thought we could figure them out. The "hosts" were helpful and pointed us in the direction they thought would hold pigs - they were there, but not when we were! We hunted at least a third of our area VERY carefully but the pigs were not there in any kind of numbers. We did spot a young boar early Saturday morning out in the "flats" but, man, that pig could run fast and climb mountains! We tried to intercept him but he never gave us more than a rear end shot until he disappeard over the ridge! We even smoothed out an area, that seemed to have been traveled by pigs, at dark on Saturday - we returned before first light on Sunday and, sure enough, fresh tracks were there! As of Saturday night only 6 pigs had been checked through - the largest was 160lbs. We stayed in a motel at the bottom of the hill - another group of "south-side" hunters were there, too, they had not seen many pigs - but said they heard that north-side hunters had already harvested 40 pigs! Sunday we saw no pigs but talked to another pair of hunters who had taken a young boar on Saturday about 10:30am that was walking out in the middle of the flats (had "our" pig returned to them?) As we left on Sunday the host at the gate had only weighed two more pigs and said if some snow had fallen in the mountains, the desert area would have been full of pigs. It seems that the north side was hot spot this weekend. Oh well. Like you guys already mentioned, this is a beautiful place to hunt. We saw a herd of pronghorns, many great looking deer including a very large and wide 2 x 2, coyotes, and lots of upland game. We had a great time and would love to go again! To those of you who were successful, congratulations!
Yote, we did as was advised and drove the fire roads, stopping to glass each area cafrefully. Most of the gunshots we heard were early morningand late evening. Saw lots of tracks and sign. They do love the thick stuff and we could actually feel there beady eyes looking at us as we drove past .... I noticed that the MArch POR has been changed to 13-14 and 15, I will not be able to make those dates unfortunately. does anyone know of an april date?
