I heard through the grapevine that Tejon will no longer allow the use of lead bullets due to Condors feeding on gut piles? Bullets such as the Barnes X would have to be used. This could be old news but it's the first I've heard of it. Is there any truth to this? Mike

Major league rumor, MEF.

The enviros are trying to push for a ban on lead bullets, but it hasn't happened yet. However, Tejon DOES request that you bury your gut piles to keep the condors from feeding on them.

Well, after some pretty deep searching on the 'net...I wouldn't be suprised if Tejon started requiring "lead free" loads on their land pretty soon.

No, I don't know how they'd enforce it...But I can see their need to head off any future liabilities or problems that could be linked to their (corporate) operations.

Been using Barnes X "all copper" bullets in my bottle necked cartridges ever since. That means I don't have to dig & bury the gut pile. A lot more convenient to shoot & scoot. Bullet fragmentation also is a thing of the past(lead poisoning??? is that only for condors??? how about accidental human consumption of lead fragments??)
We are heading towards lead free high powered bullets like it or not. There is too much invested in the condor recovery program already plus all the other birds of prey/predators that eat gut piles too. All it takes is a stroke of the pen by the powers that be. Barnes has made strides in improvement concerning accuracy, copper deposits, bullet weight selection it is just a proper gesture to the environment that is so easy to do by simply upgrading to better technology. Isn't that what progress is all about?? All this hype about Super Short Magnums being super accurate & powder efficient and they are. How about innocent animal friendly ammo, just like lead free water fowl ammo. That prodded R&D into bismuth, tungsten etc. pellets. Progress, dear friends. Sometimes it has to be compulsed on us to make us see the light of the day. God Bless. larrysogla.

The common complaint is that Barnes X is expensive or not accurate in one's rifle. Once I zero my rifle to the Barnes X I do not use it for plinking, instead I use cheap ammo or I use a different rifle for plinking/target shooting. It takes only 1 or 2 Barnes X to bring down a hog so expense is mitigated plus there is very good possibility of complete penetration(pass thru & thru) giving you the advantage of a good blood trail from the exit hole. Accuracy/compatibility problem??? It is now offered in different bullet weights/brands per caliber you may be able to hit the right combo for your rifle accuracy/barrel harmonics. Fail safe bullets are also recommended for a condor safe gut pile. Of course this is

I've also discovered that Lapua's Naturalis bullet is lead free and 99% copper. In the past few days I've done some 'net surfing and this bullet would appear to be very similar in concept & design to the Barnes Triple-Shock X-Bullet, and a few folks have said the Naturalis is the performance equal of the Barnes.

as for price, wow, I was definitely hit with sticker shock when I asked my local dealer about the price of a box of Federal .30-06 with the TSX bullet .... nearly fell over backwards.... walked out of the store hoping that my family will put some Federal under the Christmas tree this year, or that bill gates might send me a box or two.

then I got lucky a day later at Midwayusa and scored several boxes of the Lapua at a 25% discount per box. If I only shoot a few every year while pig hunting, I now have a lifetime supply.

Cheers and Happy Pig Hunting,

Carl

At the Gun Shows, the ammo prices are so much cheaper & they have Win. Fail Safe, Federal Barnes Triple X & occasionally PMC Barnes X. People will not go the extra mile/expense of lead free ammo so it will go the way of compulsed lead free water fowl ammo, magnetic free National Forest ammo, non-expanding(FMJ)ammo banned for big game, shotgun 2-shot magazine plugs, ban on armor penetrating ammo for handguns, rifle/pistol ban on L.A. county small game hunting, no target shooting in the Nat. Forests, etc., etc. How will they enforce it??? Easy, the threat of gun confiscation & court fine/jail time, that's how!!! Just try getting caught shhooting

magnetic(steel jacketed) ammo in the Nat. Forest(esecially during dry season) & they will throw the book on you. Sorry but enviro friendly is the direction of the future. God Bless. larrysogla.
