I visited the ranch early Saturday morning with acouple extra eyes since I haven't been able to cover much ground yet this year. We have made acouple of one day trips this year only to see the usual deer. badger, squirl, cows, and for the first time put a nice stalk on several elk. The two younger bulls were jousting. You want to talk about exciting. Anyways I took my brother-in-law, father, brother, and good family friend. We had a wonderful day but no luck on the piggies.
<
The freshest sign I saw had to be two days old. I think with just one more day I could have caught up with them. Has anyone seen any lately.

I know arrowslinger reported being on some last Sat.

Superduty,

Were you in a white/grey/silver ford with heavy duty bumper parked nexted to a Jeep wrangler on top of Gegis Ridge this weekend? Saw these two vehicles on Saturday morning and sounds like it could have been you.

My brother and I hunted Saturday as well. I did not see any hogs, but did see 6 elk on Gegis, talk about awesome!!! My brother saw 9 hogs on saturday. One large one that he missed and about 8 others that he could not get up on. Seems to me the hogs aren't moving around much this time of year. All the green grass and water available means they don't have to move to far from their beds to satisfy their needs. As things start to dry up the hogs will be moving a lot more.

good luck next time, maybe I will see you out there,

Jason (Grey Jeep Cherokee with lift, rack, and lights...)

Yeah, that was me in the F350 4x4 with the HD warn bumper. My brother-in-law was in the jeep. I heard some shooting Sat. morning but turned out to be some squirl hunters. I also heard some shooting Sat. evening from what sounded like the top of genguis ridge. Was that your brother?? If so where did he see the pigs cause I saw absolutely no fresh sign. I planted the guys with the jeep on gengius that evening and myself on the other side of beartrap which is where I saw the most recent sign of grubbing. I agree with you on they dont have to move much with water everywhere, feed, and bedding within a 10' radius. I normaly do better later around July. As for the elk, you and I saw the same herd I'm sure. You gota love that.

You going back anytime soon?

My brother was way back in Squirrel Canyon when he saw the pigs he saw, they were all early a.m. sightings, none of us saw anything in the afternoon. I am actually a little surprised about the rooting sign, I kind of expected to see more while the ground is nice and soft and black, seemed like last year at this time there was more sign all over the ranch. I agree though, as summer aproaches they will (hopefully) be crawling all over the place.

Did you guys notice a lot of ticks up there this year? My dad killed a hog about a month ago and it was LOADED with ticks. We saved the head to possibly mount and there must have been 100's-1000's of ticks crawling over it after a few hours. Also, my brother and his buddy found 6-8 ticks on them just from walking through the brush in Squirrel Canyon. Seems like a lot more than last year. I didn't see one tick last year and we took 6 hogs...

Those elk were awesome!! Those were the first elk I have seen up there and I was excited to see them. Its not everyone who gets to see wild Rocky Mountain Elk. We had seen so many deer up there on Saturday I first thought they were cows they were so big. Then I noticed how tall they were and it finally clicked, then of course we made a bunch of noise trying to get the camera and they were outa there...

We like to go up there as often as possible, that is the great thing about the explorer permit, all access. I would like to go up this weekend but looks like another 2 weeks or so before I get up there again.

If you are ever in the Red mountain area of the ranch (Area 2) we have a cabin (green) up there near the top that we share with some full time yearly members. If you ever see a lifted grey Jeep Cherokee that is either me (jason) or my dad, stop by and say hello. I like that bumper set up on your truck. We couldn't decide between the Warn HD bumper/winch or the ARB bumper/winch, but we finally chose the ARB set-up.

Good hunting

I'm not quit sure where squirl canyon is Jae. Is it on any map? I'll have to check all of mine. As for area 2. Where the hell is that? Boy you got me lost. I've been all over that ranch and I still don't think I have covered a quarter of it. The maps they have always given out are almost useless and don't show the areas by number. I have made my own over the years and added to it trying to connect all the dots. I think I have my work cut out for me. Who knows, If I ever get it done maybe I could share it with everybody.

As for comments on the bumper, I say thank you

I just finished the install Friday night before the trip. I still need to install my 19" 200,000. candle lights still sitting in the garage. It took me three days to install that bad boy.
<
Drop me a line before your next trip and we will try to meet up and share some knowledge. I'll keep it small, just me and Mrs. Superduty.

Superduty,

I will definately try to get in touch with you next time we head up there, it would be nice to swap stories and knowledge. As far as Area 2 and Squirrel canyon go, here is my best attempt to describe their location:

When you enter the main gate near the filming office the Tejon Lake will be on your right. When you pass the lake you will see a large flat field also on the right of the road. At the end of this field is a dirt road that branches off the paved road to the right, this happens right at a wooden stock corral. This road leads into Area 2/Red mountain area. Area 2 extends from the top of Red Mountain area all the way down to the lake shore, it is about 6,000 acres I believe. There is also a dirt road going to the left of the paved road up a moderately steep grade directly across from the dirt road going in to Area 2. This is the road that leads into Squirrel Canyon. At the top of the hill the road forks, to the left is Rising Canyon (I believe), to the right is Squirrel Canyon (aka Squirrel Springs). Hope that helps somewhat. (Of course I could be totally wrong with some of these names as it seems that everyone we meet up there has their own idea's of what different area's are called, we are still learning also.

)

Usually my dad, my brother, or myself try to get up there just about every weekend if we can, even if only for the day. I think my next trip will be next weekend, I will let you know.

My email is js_whoegee@hotmail.com if you want to get a hold of me, I check it everyday.

See you up there,
jason

Does this road to the right go off into the open field and up the canyon? Or is it the right dirt road at the top of the open field just before the asphault terns left. I'm thinking of two roads to the right before the road hangs that hard left and goes up.

As for your question the answer is yes and he's standing next to me in that picture holding his new model 7 remington short action ultra mag in 7mm. He's really good people and comes from Oklahoma. She just passed her hunting and safety course last week and will start making trips with us soon I hope. Man I think we'll go to the ranch tomorrow. All this talking about hunting is getting me excited.
