Hey guys i am finally getting my wish i will be heading to Tejon Ranch for an archery hog hunt this will be my 5th time going after hogs with a bow and my first to Tejon, i do know what kind of sign to look for i was schooled by a great hog hunter by the name of Ernie who i met at FHL about 3yrs. ago as i set by the fire and took notes since then i have been close to hogs 1 missed shot clean and other close encounters but no arrows launched so my question is i know this place is different than fhl, choppers, and the public spot i've been to which a fellow member on here whom has moved backeast now helped me with ok here we go i'll be hunting the Northside 1) is it best to get up high on a ridge and glass down into the draws 2) do the pigs prefer a specific facing slope morning or evening do to the kind of weather we could have there 3) will the pig's move to lower area's to get out of the snow for food or does this not matter much 4) i have short wheel based 4wd vehicle to get back into areas are there roads that will put you on top of the ridges and yes i will bring plenty of rope..lol any other suggestions would be appreciated if you would like feel fre to P.M.,or email........P.S. anyone else goona be there for this hunt JAN.30th - FEB.01ST!

Thanks

Great choice! Tejon Ranch is a beautiful place. Lots of pigs. I have only hunted the south side but basically you are right about getting up high and glassing. There are other members here who are more familiar with that part of the ranch.
Good luck and take plenty of pics! Archery hog hunting is a blast!

You are going to love the ranch....ive hunted (rifle) all over ca, but tejon is still my favorite. As for the north side from my experience there are pigs all over, you will need a jeep for sure on that side and i hope you dont mind it getting worked up there. If the roads are in decent shape i would drive out to where the road splits at the houses and go through gate to the right just across the bridge...follow that road way back and stay right the whole way. You can get way back up in there and find alot of piggies....I have found them all over from the lake to way up on top close to the south side.Get out early as possible and look for the food sources....good luck...

From my own lessons learned at Tejon:

ALWAYS start high and glass down. Work the high ridgelines until you spot hogs, then drop down on them. In most of that terrain, if you're down low you'll have very limited visibility for any distance. Also, be prepared... if the weather is rough you may very well find the hogs right up top with you.

Animals will appear first on the slopes that get sunlight first, and they will appear last on the slopes that get sunlight last. Same for pigs, deer, or elk in every place I've ever hunted.

The amount of snow at Tejon shouldn't make a huge difference to the pigs (think about where they originally come from), but watch the edges of the snow line. I have found hogs both high and low at Tejon in the winter.

The roads can be treacherous to even the most bad-ass 4wd. Use common sense and err on the side of caution. If a road looks bad, 90% of the time it is NOT GOING TO GET BETTER. The deeper in you go, the further you're going to have to walk for help. You would not be the first to slide off the mountain up there. You don't have to drive a thousand miles to have a good hunt at Tejon. Good boots and sharp eyes are your friend, especially when it's messy.

If, by chance, you run into one of the Tejon Guides, particularly Ron or Cody, and they casually mention some areas they like to hunt or some strategies they like to use under existing conditions... then PAY ATTENTION! That is free advice from some folks who know that ranch better than anyone you'll talk to on JHO.

Carry a pack frame and game bags (or pillow cases). If you put one down way back in there, don't try to drag it out. Bone it and pack it.

Hope some of that is helpful.

There are hogs all over the north side. Yes get up high and glass. Look under oaks for feeding hogs. Glass each face multiple times as you may not see them the first time, especially if they are moving through the trees. Get in on them with the wind in your favor and use your ears. They make a lot of noise and will give away their location. They are always moving so try to get in front of them and let them come to you. If the snow is real deep it will push them down, but a few inches will not bother them one bit. Be real safe on those roads. When in doubt, don't push it.
