Orso,

It's like a set of pulleys with a ratchet handle that provides 2-4 tons of leverage. You can pretty much pull a truck out of most holes or tight spots with it. Take a look at this one in the Cabelas catalogue

Speckmisser,
Thanks for the info! I will be sure to get a high jack at the very least, and I have some tow ropes already. Sounds like I am in for a bit of a hike with the bow, but that is alright. Any spots in the north section to focus on? I plan to glass from the ridges and make the stalk. Also what do you think the success rate of bow hunters is at Tejon.
Thanks again in advance!

No problem, Spyder.

I can't give you much info on the North side, since I haven't hunted there. Several JHO members have, though, so maybe they'll chip in some info. I know there are a couple of threads in this forum about that too, so you might do some archive diving with the search button.

I don't know if they keep stats of type of weapon used during the PORs, so I doubt anyone could tell you the success rate for archers on the regular hunts. It's probably not real high, at least not compared to the nearly 50% rate I've heard quoted as an overall success rate.

There are occasional archery-only hunts held up there, on a portion of the north side. YOu might dig around and see what other guys have posted about that hunt. It's supposed to be pretty good, comparatively.

Good hunting.

Those Hi-Lifts can perform as a come along also. So if your limited to just getting one, the Hi-lift would be my choice. Although, those come alongs are not that expensive.

I haven't hunted Tejon yet, but I have been in a lot of slick and deep mud in the mountains in my 4wd. No matter what your tires, if they load up with mud and you are on a slick track, especially off camber (leaning downhill) you just plain lose your steering, and forget about braking, which you hope to avoid having to do in the first place. Actually, snow chains are the best thing to have on all four wheels for steering purposes if you know in advance that you are going to get into that situation -- but I have never been that smart or that clairvoyant (sp)! But beware, snow chains and spinning tires will dig deep trenches in a heart-beat and you can get high-centered quickly. Best thing is too avoid that situation, but I do remember that the JHO folks last year got kinda surprised by the rain and slick mud that came in pretty quick. Lesson learned I think, is turn chicken real quick and get off the damn mountain as soon as you see a situation like that a brewin'. My son has called me chicken a lot of times over the last ten years -- but I'm too old to struggle with getting unstuck in gooey mud anymore! Anyways, have fun everybody, carry warm survival clothes and gear, an no matter what the adventure, you will live to tell the stories over the campfire for many years to come (I've got more than I care to admit).

Hey Spyder2,
You should have no problem doing an archery hunt on the Tejon hogs. I always tell the hunters you need three things to archery hunt hogs: first...feeding hogs . the hogs that are makeing tracks single file heading to water are not good targets. feeding hogs will give you the chance to move on them. second the wind must be in your face or must be in your favor. hogs use that nose as the first alert system. and third just a little cover so you can move on the hogs. however even if you have very little cover you can still move if you go slow and stop when they lift their heads to look at you.
shots of 15 to 20 yards are not uncommon.
Right now we have alot of hogs and some big ones. good luck and good hunting...
