teleconverters

Been looking at adoramas site, and seeing kenko teleconverters in 2x and 3x for my minolta, and am considering possibly getting one or the other for extending my limits on distant shots. Currently have 70-210mm and a 35-70mm minolta zoom lenses. Noticing some here are shooting with the teleconverters with dslrs, are you losing much if any quality versus just shooting with a lens? Would I be better off to just save for a 500mm lens. Not real familiar with the aftermarket brands, are kenko and tamron good quality glass?

I have a couple of T/C's, but would suggest if you can afford a decent 500mm, go that way. I think anytime you add something between your camera body and lens you will lose some quality, and you increase the odds of things that can go wrong.

If you decide on going for a teleconverter, do as much research on it as you can before you buy it (some aren't very good).

If you can't live without one, get one by Minolta. Keep in mind that you will lose 2 and 3 stops of light respectively with the tc's you're talking about. That's a lot when you are using long glass and or slow glass. For instance, if you have a 210mm f-4 w/ a 3x, you'll have a
630mm f-11 which is incrdibly slow. Take a few steps forward if you need to. LOL Maybe yu could get away with a 1.4x which would only cost you a stop?
