DALLAS (Reuters) – October won't be the best month to be a feral hog in the state of Texas.
The state's Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples has declared October "Hog Out Month - Get the Hog Outta Texas!" as part of a campaign to eradicate the pests.
The campaign aims to get Texans to lock and load and hunt down the animals, which cause widespread damage to farmers and other landowners.
"Not only are feral hogs a costly nuisance to agricultural operations and wildlife habitats, but they are increasingly finding their way into urban areas and destroying residents' yards, public parks and golf courses," Staples said in a statement this week when the campaign was unveiled.
"On my ranch in East Texas, I have eliminated a number of hogs and I am asking Texans around the state to step up and join the county challenge to learn about feral hogs and how best to legally hunt and trap them in their area," he added.

Who's gonna turn down money?

I think it's because it is a market economy, and nobody is going to turn down a little chump change every now and then. They do actually pay to have them controlled by professional hunters, so they're looking to recoup their money by charging the public. It makes perfect sense. :hog chewing:

seems to me it would make more sence to let more people hunt for free and not have to pay anyone.

I totally agree with that sentiment, but you know, people get greedy when they smell that filthy lucre. Even if it is covered in pig crap...:thread jacked:

funny timing. i just got back from texas. i talked to a rancher and asked him that very same question; is there REALLY a hog population in texas?

i may be paraphrasing, but he said; "texas hog problem? that is complete bullschit!!"
those guys (and i have seen it with my own eyes) move hogs from property to property just to satiate the hunting demand. i was standing near him, when one of his property managers "ordered 250 hogs". he wouldnt tell me where he gets his hogs from, but he said it was near dallas. it sounded like the source, had a "hog problem" but he loved it. he trapped whatever was needed and sold them for money.

there is a hog catching contest near ulvalde. they typically need to order 75 animals to let the competitors have enough to catch!!

is catching and releasing wild hogs legal? no..they get around it by trapping them, keeping them in pens and then releasing them. some gray area, domestic pig issue. that part of the conversation got foggy.

Well I speak from my own personal experience and that is that in Texas certain areas have more a problem than others. Where farming cash crops is king pigs are likely gonna be an issue. where the land is desert well maybe not so much but where i am from we most certainly have a problem. We got plenty of accounts where pigs are now in peoples backyards eaten the home owners personal veggies (non rural areas) Alot of ranchers I have known are all about lettin ya try and kill one but they tend to not just give free riegn to come one come all hunters because the potential for poaching other game animals. I dont know about you but Id rather just catch em in hog pins and sell em to caged hunt places than give everyone in the county a place to trash and shoot guns at pigs. JMHO!

has nothing to do with to many pigs. but the ranch owner just northwest of dallas just dropped his price for me and two friends to hunt in feb down to $350 per person. thats for a 5 day hunt and bunk house. we have to do are own cooking and cleaning. sure cant beat that deal. oh we have to buy a bag of corn a day another 50 pp.
