Texas Fish & Game Youth Essay Contest

2/21/08

In keeping with outdoors tradition, nostalgia, and a desire to engender the love of the outdoors and associated literature in future generations, in its March issue Texas Fish & Game magazine announces its First Annual Texas Fish & Game/Outdoor Texas Camp Essay Contest for youths.

The contest is open to youths age 11-17. The rules are simple: Write a 1000-word essay on what the outdoors means to you, and why. Entries will be judged by Texas Fish & Game staff. First prize is a scholarship to the winner’s choice of the Texas Outdoor Fishing Camp or Hunting Camp, valued at $1000. The camps are held at Stoney Creek Ranch, a full-service facility near Columbus, Texas.

“My earliest childhood memories involve my family’s fishing camp on Lake Bridgeport, and hunting with my grandfather,” said Texas Fish & Game editor-in-chief Don Zaidle. “As a kid, I read every outdoors magazine I could get my hands on, and from that my interest in hunting and fishing grew into wanting to be an outdoor writer. It took a while, but I ultimately realized that boyhood dream. I firmly believe there are a lot of kids with similar dreams. This contest is a way for them to get a start on realizing that dream.”

The magazine’s executive editor, Chester Moore, started his career mostly the same way, getting a leg up by winning the now defunct TPWD Wildlife Expo Essay Contest at age 18, thus launching his outdoor writing career.

“We think making an investment in the future by encouraging kids to get involved in all aspects of the outdoors is essential to outdoor sports,” Moore said. “And that includes outdoor writing and photography. This contest is just one of many youth-oriented outreach programs at Texas Fish & Game.”
