So I am out early in the morning driving around in my elk hunt unit when I get the hanker'n for my favorite breakfast sandwich from McDonald's. I pull into the McD's drive through in the small little tourist town I am near, and as I pull up to the menu some movement catches my eye. I see antler tips swaying back and forth up above the top of the fence next to the drive through. I put the truck in park and bail out with my phone (luckily no one is behind me). I stand on a rock and peak over the fence and see these two elk. One elk was very close, feeding in a recreation area next to some living quarters for the seasonal workforce. The elk had come into town to feed from the nearby forest. I notice another man with a camera taking pictures from a walk through area in the fence that led to the McDonald's parking lot. The man leaves and I go over to the walk through where I can see the elk better. From there I was about 7 yards from the bull that was feeding next to the volleyball net and horse shoe pits.
The silence breaks when I hear "hello, hello, is anybody there?, can I take your order please" from the drive through speaker. I run back to the truck, place my order and drive to the window. The girl in the McDonald's tells me she sees them all the time and sometimes has to walk past the elk to get to work. I pull around and park and get out and go back to where I can take more pictures. I watch the elk for a while until they feed back into the treeline of the national forest in the background.
Who knew, I was spending all that time up there scouting for elk and all I had to do was go to McDonald'd to get an "Egg White Delight McMuffin" and I would find bulls..... :smile-yellow: "An Elk Burger To Go Please" !
P.S. - I tried to brighten some of the pictures because the light was still low. Some of the pictures are a little grainy.
