I went on a hunt with Flatbroke and his dogs this morning. We rolled into the property just before daylight. Flatbroke was on his quad with his main strike dog. His dad, and one of his son's was next on his quad with another dog, and I was bringing up the rear with another one of his son's, his brother and two more of Flatbrokes dogs in my truck. As we started in through the first gate the main dog was wanting to go. Flatbroke turned him out. He took off at a full run and never looked back. We knew at this point he was winding a hog. I turned out his number two dog, and he lined out after the other dog. After about 10 minutes of waiting the dogs opened up about 700 yards away. It was a great long range strike. We raced in their direction with the quads and the truck. The next stop place us at the base of the mountain about 400 yards from the bay. Here we sent the other two dogs in. Knowing there was no road to get us closer we began the foot pursuit (at least for some of us). It took us about 15 minutes to get up the hill to them. They were on the side of a ravine with studded oaks and brush patches. The dogs had him bayed in a little clearing. I could see the hog spinning and charging, and the dogs doing a great job of keeping him there. Before we could get a clean shot he broke. They ran for maybe 200 yards side hill before they had him stopped again. This time we were there in time. Flatbrokes 16 year old son took the shot from about 40 feet. The hog dropped with a bullet hole right between the eyes. Things were intense enough we did not get the chance to take action photos. At times we could hear the dogs fighting pretty hard. After taking a look at the dogs we found the main dog was cut twice and the number two dog once. Once again the cut vests saved the dogs from any major wounds. As we were loading up the truck, and taking a couple photos, I looked at the clock. The actual hunt itself lasted about 30 minutes.

Hunting with dogs is exciting, scary at times, and a but load of exercise in a short period of time but well worth it IMHO.
