K, you don't have to answer in question form. Only hint you get is this pic is from somewhere in California and the time of year was March. If you've seen this pic before, please let the others have a shot at it.

Bonus question for a second grunt tube is what was the animal eating to produce this scat?

I've got a box full of deer grunt tubes for the winner. We can do a couple of these until I run out of pics and grunt tubes. Anybody else who has scat pics and want's to post them feel free.

My guess is that this animal was eating meat and blood.  (fawns? , (march pic) )   Large cat is my guess.

BTW, how do you post pics , I would like to show you fellers the buck I was blessed with in 2000.

Never having been out west to see the different scats available to hunters,I'll guess that it belongs to a small bear travelling uphill on a southern exposed slope!*L*

As for what it was eating,it would appear to be some kind of berry/fruit that only gets eaten after everything else is gone

Not knowing where in Ca, and not seeing anything else in the pic except dried grass and a broadhead...

Everyone else has guessed hog, which would be one of my two thoughts, so I'll go with my other guess which is elk.  The big pellets, compacted together like that..but then, I've only just started learning about elk, and the only time I've seen their scat outside of pictures was at Grizzly Island.

I've seen deer make compressed scat like that too, but the pellets are usually more distinctive.  This is a tough one, with no more to go on than the photo and the state.  Cool!

Prohunter got it, a hog. For what they were eating it would have helped if I had cut one of those patties open to see better. Anymore guesses on the diet that day?

Well, Prohunter beat me to it but my guess was a good sized hog. Maybe been into someones garden or berry batch because the scat is so dark.

Hey Paul,

Don't feel too bad.  I've got my girlfriend into hunting, and teaching her to identify scat.  The other day, as we were hiking along she identified a couple of different piles, then turned to me in a kind of shock.  How many other couples spend their time walking in the woods and analyzing doo-doo?  She can't believe what I've done to her.

Heheh.  Next it's skinning knives and camo for birthday gifts, instead of jewelry or furs.
