Okay, fess up. How many of you guys have taken a day off from work to go shed hunting? Whether it be a call-in-sick or taking a vacation day--either way. I know Deershed has done this and to me that's the epitome of a true dyed in the wool shed hunter. I'm fixing to do it in a week or so when our snow is off ( I carried a couple over fixin to do just that). Some good boots, and a few cold pepsis in the car and just walk till my legs fall off. If I find one, I'll call the day a success.

Hey, I think you're onto something there. The note would read "Brotherwolf needs some time to get in touch with himself". Translation...."Brotherwolf needs a day off to roam the hills looking for those industrial strength Iowa sheds".

I took a vacation day last friday and was already planning on calling in sick tomorrow.Maybe if I find some sheds I'll make it a 2 for 1 deal and call in tuesday too.
I shed hunt with competetioin in my areas and if you want the sheds you gotta be there while the sheds still are.

Today would have been the day to go with the skies overcast, but didn't think about it til I was half way to work.

You know, I noticed work is getting in the way. This year I've actually taken boots to work and ran out and looked about 15 minutes from here during the friday lunch (one hour). That's borderline fanatical. I think I may take Friday off as the snow's coming off fast and there's sheds out there to be found. I gotta hand it to Deershed. He's got to compete and fight for what he get's. I rarely see any tracks anywhere but get really pissed off and discouraged when I do.

Well add me to the list of fanaticals, I went out yesterday during my lunch hour to look for sheds. I'm lucky enough to work near the "edge" of town where alot of timber land butts up to the city. I found a bunch of trails and droppings, but no sheds.....I need a longer lunch break!!!!

Back when I was working, I did have some strange illnesses that kept me from work, but I was not too bad when out in the field

I just needed that fresh air only the woods can give!

I am going to be layed off at the end of the month, so I'll have almost a whole month to shed hunt before I start guiding for spring bear. I think we're going to take a family camping trip for a week or so in some good muley shed hidey holes. I'll take the wall tent and the wood stove and hopefully I'll bring home a whole truckload.

Forget the lunch breaks, take the whole day off!! I called in today and again tomorrow after what I found today.
I went back to the area where I couldn't figure out what happened to all the sheds and figured it out.I found 13 sheds total for the day and 10 came from that one area,8 of the 10 where all found within 100 yards of each other.Of the 10 there was 2 matching sets.
If that wasn't good enough,I then went to another area I went to my first trip Jan 15th.I found a 3pt. side back then, then today found the other half to make it three matching sets today.
I'll go out tomorrow and probably won't find a shed.

Holy Cow! You are really tearin-out-the-bone. Burnin the woods up. Congratulations on a fantastic pile of sheds....13 in one day. Can I come down and spend a day with ya next spring (you keep what I find). I'd just once like to experience that rush of finding so many good sheds. But hey, you left us hangin on exactly where were the bucks.....what kind of spot was it where they holed up during that heavy snow period? Maybe we can take something away from that info. Nice goin.

Shag-days like today don't happen very often for me.I wish I had a mile meter so I can see how many miles I put in each time out.I walked my butt off trying to see what happened with those sheds.
I started off by taking the most likely route the deer would have gone after leaving the area I had already searched.I had a hunch where the deer had gone, but had to cross a creek to get there and that spot usually gets hit by other shed hunters. Not this time!! I looked everywhere, but there and came up empty.
Across the creek is a hillside that runs up above the creekbottom. The hillside is on a south facing slope and is sorta like a intersection. The hillside is on a point where the hollow begins. The creek runs below this hill and bends back around the hill.On the south facing side of the hill is a grassy meadow below the hill and on the back side and up the hollow along the creek is some mountain laurel.Up above the mountain laurel is open woods then those big suburbia backyards.
The deer had the south facing slope for warmth and a natural wind breaker behind the hill in the thick mt. laurel.
I guess?

Man, you had the kind of day I dream about. Hiking into an area where a mess of bucks had congregated and shed....and before anyone else had gotten in there to boot. You must've felt like a sex maniac in a brothel with a "fistfull of fifties" or the shed hunting equivalent of that. I wish you had that digital with you to take some shots of the area in question. How the heck did you manage to carry em all out of the woods?

I guess I'm going in the wrong spots, I don't even have 13 sheds all together yet! Great job, and a nice bunch of sheds. I'm going to try and get the 4-wheeler out and cover some of the trails through the big fields, I have only found 1 shed in the last two years, I don't even want to know how many miles it took for me to find that one shed!!

I did get out for the first half day Friday, hit the woods at 6:00 and found a nice 4 point side at about 8:45. Stayed with it until about 11:30 with no more found. Was pretty hapopy with the one side found though. Will try tp osit the pic where I saw it.

Some thing I forgot to mention on the sheds in the photo.I thought it was pretty neat seeing the effect 2 months has on the coloration of a shed.
The 3pt. set in the upper right of photo is a set that each side was found 2 months apart. The antler on the left was found Jan.15 th and the antler on the right was found March 18th.My guess is that both sides were found shortly after being dropped, both pedicels were very fresh and clean looking.Neither shed had any chewing which doesn't mean a thing.
I think the slight fading was from sunlight and weather as it was still attached. Both sides were found about 3/4's a mile apart along the same hillside above a creekbed and were both found sitting high and dry on top of dry leaves in the woods.I never noticed a difference like this with any of the other matching sets I've found.
Pretty cool huh!!

You're right, the one side is quite a bit more bleached out but do you think he could've held it all that time? It coulda lightened up just with the extra time in the woods environment with some sun on it, no? That would be the strangest part--holding it for so long. I'm praying that the one I found today was heavy enough that the buck will not have dropped the other too far away--maybe hooked it off or kicked it off somewhere close. About time to go back to Pennsylvania?
