I was wondering for those of you who go on guided hunts what is the customary tip amount for a guide? I assume it is some percentage of the hunt cost but I don't know how much to tip. I am assuming great service of course. Not necessarily getting an animal but someone who tries hard and is willing to teach clients about all aspects of the sport.

I always wondered what the average amount was myself. I just figured 15 - 20% like restaurant.

Nice post

Depending on how hard the guide works is how I tip. The guide I usually hunt with works his tail off, so I know before hand how much I'm gonna tip. For a $450.00 hog hunt I'll tip $60.00.....

Do you guys tip if it is the owner of the operation that is guiding for you or only if it is a hired guide? I have always tipped the latter but am hit or miss on the former.

If someone wants to do a search, there are a couple of extensive threads on this topic.

The general etiquette says you don't tip the owner of the operation, since you're already paying him. However, I've found that when the owner goes out his way to ensure that I have a great time, I usually try to get a little token of appreciation to him, although it may not always be monetary. A bottle of his favorite beverage, a book by an author you may have talked about, or even a gift cert to his favorite store can be appreciated.

For the hired help, 10-20% depending on the cost of the hunt and the effort he put in.

remebmer when tipping when using a guide that you should tip the guide only hes responsible for sharing/tipping the owner if hes helping. you hired the guide all transactions should be threw him and any problems if any should happen should be talked to threw him so he may resolve it.but most now are 15-20% based on the performance of his work some have been known to tip greatly higher.

When in doubt who or how much to tip, just ask your outfitter ahead of time.

So you guys are saying that if the hunt is $600, and the guide works hard, you should tip him $90, which is 15%?

As a guide for 11 years now I've seen it all when it comes to tips. I've been tipped $5.00 and as high as $375 for a weekend hunt. If my clents were happy with the hunt and my effort toward the hunt then $20/day/hunter is always a good place to start. So for 2 guys on a two day hunt that would be $80. That's a nice size tip for me and doesn't break the hunters wallets.

Thanks, Dwayne!

That's the kind of "horse's mouth" information folks really need to hear.

I think one of the reasons no one really knows the "right answer" to questions like this is because the folks who should know don't tell... not due to ill will, but usually out of some perceived notion of propriety. It never seems right for someone to appear to be asking for a tip, but it sure is helpful to those being served to know what is a fair or expected amount.
