went for round two today at laguna. no hogs once again. the ground was frozen, so not much as far as tracks. figured some of you might want to know i saw both coyote and elk today though. a pair of coyotes early on, and a group of three elk more towards noon. cool place but i'll be darned if i can find a hog. maybe i'm doing it wrong, who knows. either way i'll be back next week, unless anyone's got a better suggestion as far as BLM land goes?

Why not give FHL a try. Much better odds there than Laguna.

No better suggestion. You're in good territory. It takes time and persistence to whack a hog out of that place, but it will be pretty rewarding when you do.

Get in there a lot, learn the trails and regular areas, and put in some time. Barring sheer, piss luck, that's the only way you'll ever get a hog out of public land anywhere in CA.

I like Laguna Mountain. I just paid $90 for a permit at FHL, and my favorite water holes are dried up. Just wondering if Hernandez Reservoir has any water in it? That's the large lake off to the left of Laguna on the way up. There is plenty of BLM in that area, but you will have to do your home work. It's worth the effort once a few small BLM parcels are your own. The government has been putting the survey stuff up on the net for the public to use, and it doesn't take a college professor to figure it out. This is the one that I have been using:

http://www.geocommunicator.gov/LSIS6/map.jsp

Just keep zooming in until the yellow BLM parcels start to show up. The Sections Lines are on the 24K Quadrangles, so the quarter-quarter of a section squares can be transferred. I fold a piece of white paper to quarter-quarter's and hold it up against the Ozi screen.

Here an example of a GeoCommunicator screen-save of Stockdale Mountain. The purple squares are the Quarter-Quarter's that the government has added. I continue doing my own with white paper. When I zoom out from there I see BLM land all around Parkfield.

there's plenty of water around. hernandez looks fairly full, or at least its outlet stream is flowing. laguna creek's also going strong. so hopefully some of that will spread around. we'll see...water seems to be pretty scarce in most places these days. who knows. i'll keep putting in the time. right now i've only gone for 3 full days, so i haven't lost all hope yet. granted i'll take any and all suggestions.

just so you know all clear creek is closed. the area around the hernandez reservoir if i remember correctly it is not closed but the only thing is that means crossing private and closed areas to get there. 2 hunters a couple weeks ago were fined by both the dfg and blm. dfg for the pig they got and blm for hunting in the area around. when your up at laguna theres almost always a blm officer you can talk to about boundries, he informed us about the area around lake hernadez

think well be heading up there at about 3am hopefully well see some piggies

Good points, all...
It always takes time to figure out the public land hunting, be very sure that you are on public land and remember that even if it's not posted, it might be private property.
