went out turkey hunting for the first time by myself this weekend set up my decoys and started to call not even 5 seconds they started to gobble every where i can see them strutin but they were 100 yards the closes they came to the decoys was about 60 yards then they must of seen me move and they took off so i tried to pick up my decoys to set up were they might be going and there was a rattler right next to my decoy so i shot its head off got my decoy set up again not 5 minutes 1 came in 60 yds.strutin closer and closer then boom got my first turkey,8 inch beard 3/4 spurs.does any body know what kind of turkeys we have in california?sorry no pictures,went so fast from the field to the oven.

Congrats Raghorn, I believe we here in California have 3 species depending on where you go. Above the 4,000 ft mark are the merriams, along the coast and in the oak wooded areas are the rio grandes and a rio -eastern hybrid.  Where in Ca did you hunt? Nice job using the decoys....

 Around Napa would probably be a Rio-Merriam hybrid.
