A Topeka ophthalmologist has died from injuries suffered Sunday in a hunting accident in Lyon County.
Dr. Paul E. Young died Sunday after being struck with pellets from a 12-gauge shotgun, said Lyon County Undersheriff Richard Old. Young was shot at about 8:30 a.m. while hunting turkey on his property in the far northeast corner of Lyon County.

Old said the shooting was reported as a hunting accident; however, it must be investigated.

"I haven't found anything to make me suspect otherwise, and we'll do a thorough job of (investigating) it," he said.

Young was hunting with Anthony Alexander about 20 miles northeast of Emporia. Authorities said Alexander thought he was firing at a turkey, but it turned out to be turkey decoys in Young's back pocket.

Old said Alexander went to a house about a mile away for help. Young was taken by a helicopter ambulance to The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., where he died.

An autopsy was scheduled for today, Old said
