Fellow Hunters,
My younger brother is fairly new to hunting and has been getting kind of discouraged with our lack of luck. I am dying to take him on a guided hunt to keep his interest up, and was looking to see if anyone would be willing to consider a trade. I have a custom made sandrail frame from Prowlers Speed and Custom (Hi-Jumper Frames) that is waiting to be built. I would be willing to trade it for a guided hunt or at least access to land that is filled with some hogs! I would be willing to throw in the heavy duty 3x3 trailing arms as well. The value of this package is well over $2000 and there is a 1 year waiting list for these frames. Let me know if you would be interested!

Instead of trading the rail, sell it for $2000 and go on two Pig O Ramas at Tejon Ranch, hunt Camp Roberts a few times, and check out a guided hunt in central Ca. That should make your brother very very happy, and put lots of pork in the freezer.

The person who started this thread has to get his attitude adjusted.
Teaching a child to hunt encompasses the all of outdoors.
When you master yourself to enjoy the healthful walks out scouting for your quarry and continuing learning your quarry. If the quarry is more intelligent than you are give up the sport, yield to higher intelligence. Take up bowling.
Nothing about hunting is easy.

I would look at it as a joint learning experience to share with your son.
If done right (as I did with my son 45 years ago) he will look back and say, "Dad, you remember that time we,,,,,,,,,,,"

The other extreme, guy I know forced his kid to kill.
They went to Game Farms and hired Guides. Today all three of his boys dispised anything to do with Hunting and are total Anti-Hunt.

I remember as a 12 YO, friend of mine and I took up Bow Hunting.
It takes endless hours, days, weeks months (years really) practicing shooting
to become good with a bow.
We went out camping weekends scouting for the day of the hunt.
That was over 50 years ago and I haven't changed my tactics one bit.
The biggest adventure of hunting is being out in the great outdoors.

What fun and adventure is there paying a guide who drives you up to the game and you shoot it?

Geez, lighten-up 291. I don't hunt with guides either, but when you put it like that, all anyone hears is bla..bla..bla

Yah! At least he's interested in hunting. And, he came to JHO for some friendly advice. I don't hunt with guides either. But, it might be a nice introduction to seeing some game, learning about field dressing, and enjoying the outdoors. And, it could even put a few hundred bucks in a Pig Guide's pocket.

Cak291,

When you master the art of taking pigs on pulic land give me a call maybe you can teach me a thing or two. I think all this guy is looking for an opportunity not an easy kill. Lighten up cak291 everyone gets discouraged and having some one show you the ropes is always increases confidence.

I wasn't hog hunting one morning, just out flashing the Game Finder around. I'd stop driving every few minutes and work the GF.
Bingo, all the lights went on. Oh I strained my eyes and restrained them
looking into the grass. I was about to give up and accidently madeout PIG.
Not 40 feet away - - - PIG!
One less piggy that will stray off Tejon Ranch.[/b]

Tell me, since you're in to chastising people for not being as intelligent as their quarry, do you have to use a game finder to be more intelligent than your quarry. Maybe you didn't figure that we would read both posts. Bet that wasn't on your game finder was it??

Now who should start bowling?

Definitely not the usual (and respectful) response most of us enjoy when we ask questions on this site. IMO unwelcome and uncalled for.

Kids or those new to hunting have short attention spans. They need to see lots of game and hopefully have an opportunity for a harvest early on. This hooks them into the sport and makes them want to spend the time (and $$$) required to be a successful hunter, especially on public land.

I don't see how forcing an unwilling kid to make a kill, there by souring them on hunting, has anything to do with this case.

WOW!

I stareted this thread in the hopes that someone would be interested in making a swap. Without trying to start a flame war, cak291, you are an a**. I think it is great how you started harping in without know a damn thing about us. For your information, we haev paid our dues at trying hunting public land (too many trips to FHL to count, the national forest, Camp Roberts, and many other public lands). Nothing was mentioned about our want to go out and round up the hogs into a pen and go wild. We love the outdoors and would hike every weekend if we could, but thats not ALL hunting is about. If all I wanted to do was hike, I would stay local and save the 250 mile drive. And you say that "Master yourself to enjoy the healthful walks out scouting for your quarry and continuing learning your quarry..." Well my friend , if I dont have anyone to learn from, how will I "learn my quarry..." I have no-one in my family that hunts, nor do we have anyone we know that hunts. Its like getting a driver's license...somebody needed to teach you the rules and how to drive. Its people like you that discourage newer and younger hunters from getting into the sport! No wonder why everybody talks about how the number of hunters are dwindling. If you are such a sportman and conisuer of the spirt how about lending a hand rather than make snide, obnoxious comments. Maybe you should take up bowling, cause it sure seems as if your thinking is in the gutter!

PS: Iappreciate all those that have given me friendly advice in the past and were true stewards of the sport.

haninghog,
Don't feel the need to defend yourself. There was nothing wrng about your post. There is no shame in honestly asking for a bit of help. Especially after you have paid your dues. There is a Swap hunt forum here for things like this so you may want to check that out. As for your frame, I too think you would be better off selling it and then looking into a guided hunt. Do it at least once, it's worth the money. You will get to see lots of animals and learn how they behave. Pick the guides brain for information. Then you can take that knowledge and hunt on your own at Tejon. As you know public land hog hunting is very tough. Feel free to pm or email me for some pointers.

From his last post offering his wisdom and experience in the 4x4 forum:

"I will not return to this Web Site.
I knew better but I let myself signin the other day.
The minute I signed in - - - I am being beseiged with SPAM.
All of a sudden being hit with hundreds of SPAM crap.
It isn't just coincidence in my viewpoint.
All these damn BB Forums collect email addresses and sell them.
Change my Email name with my ISP and get the SPAM stopped.
You people have a good one.

I'm a bit torn on this one. Some of the garbage he was posting was pretty funny.

Good riddance

Sorry about getting bashed, this is not usually a forum for that, glad the peanut gallery is gone, or so he says.

I have never hunted hogs in California, but have a lot in Georgia, after you get a guided hunt out here, and if traveling is what you want, there are a few states that have tons of public land hunting, if that is up your ally, also, as far as I know, other places don't have as much interest in hogs as is in California, nor as many places that offer guided hunts, so private land is easy to get permission to hunt hogs, I know back home there a a few farms that would not let anyone even ask to hunt deer or turkeys, but if you want to kill off some hogs then they will do everything except pay you, some will even do that.

Anyway these guys seem to think selling your frame is the best idea, considering most hog hunts I have seen are much cheaper than two grand, I would recommend the same, there are a few respectable guys on this forum that offer guided pig hunts, I can't speak for them but from other posts I would say they could probably help.

Anyway, sorry you had to deal with Cak, good luck in your pursuit, and have fun with your brother, I have a son on the way and can't wait for his first hunts.......
