First off I'm not sure if this is the right area to pose my question but it seems the most logical.

Here's the deal, in November of this year I'm heading to Oregon to hunt :gunfighter:bear, elk and ducks with my brother in law that lives there. I was planning to take my gear and fly there. My question is since the lower cabin of the plane is not always pressurized, will that effect my optics at all and if so, what do all if you do to counter these issues? I will be taking a bushnell scope fixed to my rifle, Nikon riflehunter rangefinder, Nikon Monarch bino's. Should I try and carry on my optic's, well other than the one on my rifle cause I don't want to resight it in. I will be double checking its accuracy when I get there though!
Thank for the help,
JO

First of all I have not done it personally but I know a lot of people who have flown with optics in checked bags and have none of them have ever had a problem. I personally would not worry about it at all. Now if I paid a bunch of money to fly somewhere and hunt I would be replacing that Bushnell with a Leupold, but you didn't ask that question so I will not comment on it.

Ya the plan is to replace the bushnell with a Nikon Monarch 4x16x50SF however with only a month to go until the season opener, I don't have the time to resight in my rifle with another scope and continue scouting hard. So just gotta deal with that scope this season.

I have flown several times with firearms mounted with scopes as well as binoculars which were stowed in the plane's luggage compartment. I've never had a problem one. I would caution, however, against dismounting a scope from your rifle and trying to put in your carry on luggage. I was advised long ago to never carry any part of a rifle or anything associated with a hunting rifle onboard a commercial flight.

The idea of disassembling, say the bolt from your rifle, making the remaining rifle less desireable to steal is one thing that's a definite no-no. I understand that a scope is a different type of "part", but I'd be very hesitant to try and carry it on board. The security people may have a way different view than we as hunters do about such things. And, it is their call, not ours. I'd hate to be standing there, holding the bolt assembly for my Sako(or scope), told it cannot go with me, as the "rest" of my rifle was being loaded on board.:skeered:

Unless you fly something small. Cargo holds are pressurized and usually one or more is heated for pets. Crapshoot where your bags end up. I think the danger is in the bagdraggers that are paid $5,- an hour and don't care.
Good luck
