CONEJOS COUNTY - Four prominent Conejos County citizens were contacted Monday after allegedly illegally killing two bull elk and one deer from the Banded Peak Ranch in the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant.
Sunday, Sept. 9, ranch personnel observed the men trespassing on Ranch property and then watched them with the illegal kills.
The unidentified ranch workers rented a helicopter and picked up a Division of Wildlife officer taking him to the area.
The poachers were contacted from the air and warned that failure to pack out the illegal kills could result in further charges being assessed. The men agreed to pack out the animals and were met at the trailhead sometime Monday where DOW officials advised the men of their rights.
The men involved were Dr. Vaughn Jackson of Manassa, Brian Jackson, P.A. of La Jara, Rodney King of Alamosa, a teacher at Centauri and prominent figure in the emergency medical field, and John Robins of Antonito.
According to Division of Wildlife officials, charges are pending against each of the men.
The men were carrying muzzle-loading licenses but each of the animals was killed with a 30/30 rifle.
Reportedly, one of the bull elks killed was a 6-point bull.
Unlawful kill of a trophy bull invokes the Samson Law carrying a surcharge of $10,000 in addition to the $1,370 fine for an illegal take or possession.
Other lesser pending charges include unlawful use of a weapon, failure to wear blaze orange, and trespassing.
As of press time, a DOW official indicated a fifth prominent Conejos County citizen will be investigated with regard to a possible charge of unlawful transfer of a license.
The DOW official stated the investigation is still under way and a summons will be filed in Archuleta County where the actual kills occurred on Ranch property.
The trailhead where the four men entered and left the land grant area is located near Trujillo Meadows in southwestern Conejos County.
