Any of you ever tried a red-dot sight for pig hunting? I have a Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 and I want to re-scope it. Currently I have a Leupold M8-2x Extended Eye Relief, mounted on an Ashley/XS Scout Mount, and it's not too good for pigs. The scope doesn't gather much light, and the forward position reduces the field of view too much. I'm looking for alternatives and thinking about going with a red-dot of some kind.

Zippy,
My buddy's Marlin Guide Gun(45-70) has a red dot sight & he uses it on night(full moon) hunts in Texas. He has bagged 2 big hogs in quick succession from the same herd due to the wide field of view & bright image & of course his Guide Gun was the earlier model with ported muzzle(no muzzle flip on firing). However, it is for short range only(less than 100 yds.). God Bless. larrysogla.

I've had a red dot on my Winchester lever action and like it very much. I'm definitely range-limited due to aging eyes, but within 75 yards I find the red dot very accurate. It has the 11 brightness settings feature which provides a red dot light level for everything from low light to full sunlight.

My pal Tim recently put a red dot on his .45-70 Marlin lever gun and with his much better eyesight is a dead-eye at 100 yards.
unfortunately the red dot couldn't take the punishment and expired after about 40 shots. So figure out which brand can take a pounding.

And I've had a red dot on my Mini-14 for a couple of years and love it, I have no problem hitting a 4"-square metal plate at 100+ yards.

Cheers,

Carl
