I realize the 2018 Elk season may be a long ways away but i am looking for input on where to put in for in 2018 to try and bag a tule elk. I am the type that likes to plan far in advance even if it means a few years. I would like to first find a unit that typically holds big bulls then continues to scout and research until drawn for the area. Any help or suggestions are welcomed.

You may be scouting until you die unless you get very lucky or buy a auction or land owner tag

My suggestion: you'll have better luck if you drive to Colorado and buy an OTC tag.

I put in for cache creek this year because it had a little better odds with max points then a lot of the other units and I actually drew 1st alternate and got the tag.

When did the season open? It use to be Oct.15th.

With once-in-a-lifetime tags (Elk, Sheep, Antelope) if you don't have max points, then you have the equivalent of zero points. The best bet is putting in for a Share hunt or Fund raising tag. However, I do know someone with less than max points who got La Panza on random.
