I hunted upper cottonwood about a month ago. I am almost glad I didn’t see a little piggy because we were so far back in the hills that it would have been hell getting the animal back to the truck. I need some guidance before I try it again. What should I do if I shoot a pig back in the hills, one mile away from the truck, through rough terrain? Should I gut the animal where I shoot it, sew it back up to keep dirt from getting in the cavity and drag the carcass to the car or gut and skin in the field then somehow pack it out? What is the most efficient way to get the animal back to the truck without spoiling the meat or killing my back?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Take a framepack. Take the back straps and put them in a pillow case with the tenderloins. Take both hams and the front shoulders minus everything below the knee. After that figure out if you can carry any extra weight. If so add some cuts of meat that you would prefer. If not leave the rest.

I recommend boning the meat out ASAP as hogs (especially in any heat) will spoil faster than any other game meat available. Also, hogs carry a some nasty bacteria that will taint the meat. The best and safest bet is to skin it and bone it out as fast as possible. Then put it in a pack and walk it back to your cooler waiting at the pickup.

My dad and I have taken a few big sizes pigs out of there and we usually drag them out to the main road and just drag him all the way down to the trucks, that way we are not leaving any meat behind. But if its only you hunting, I say buy a good pack and skin it and debone it, then try too fit as much of the meat in your pack. I hate seeing hunters take more than what they can carry out.

only shoot pigs 100-175 then hang with small block and tackle. skin back legs first then testicles and sent bag...skin falls away from meat(nice and clean) put front shoulders in 6 mill plastic trash bag then fillet as close as you can to ribs...go inside and get the loins... you need a good pack to haul it out...also a good knife and steel...I use a green river buffalo skinner.$10.00...also need hatchet to split hips....you should be able to carry 100lbs of meat this way....up to 8 miles some times..I usually walk 3 miles or more before I find hogs.... I could it do for you sometime then youll see how simple it is....with 2 guys should only take 30 to 40 min to field dress and load backpacks...good luck
